Treatment of Muscle Disuse Atrophy
MFAC LARGE MUSCLE
Program used for muscle re-education and treatment of muscle disuse atrophy. Activation of muscle with electrical
stimulation at a high intensity for a short time with long “ON/OFF ramps reduces atrophy. The patient should
participate to the extent possible by contracting during the stimulation “ON” time. Target tissues are superficial and
deep muscle groups. Bipolar set-up over agonist and antagonist muscles for target muscle. The intensity should be set
to elicit a grade 2 to 4 muscle contraction. Treatment time should be reduced based on muscle fatigue. The affected joint
movement should be restricted by holding manually, or using weights or exercise bands.
