The Superconducting Magnet
General description
The Agilent Premium Shielded configuration means that this
magnet has all the excellent characteristics of a standard
magnet but with a significantly reduced stray field. The
magnet and screen are wound from multi- filamentary NbTi
conductor. The windings are placed on precision- machined
formers and then fully vacuum impregnated for robustness
and long- term reliability.
The magnet is designed to exacting standards of
homogeneity. Proprietary jointing techniques for NbTi
materials ensure the best field stability. Inevitably, winding
tolerances and small amounts of environmental influence
distort the central field. Corrections for these distortions are
made in the first instance by superconducting shim coils
located on a former surrounding the main coil. Final
corrections are made by room temperature correction coils
placed in the bore of the system, supplied by the customer.
The magnet coils are fully protected from accidental damage
due to a magnet quench by a passive resistor/diode network
located within the helium reservoir.
The magnet is designed to conservative levels of stress and
mechanical stability to ensure reliable and stable operation.
In addition, the use of high quality superconducting wire
ensures that a top quality magnet system is delivered.
