CONTROL INTRODUCTION
The Series 800/850 TEC Controllers have been designed to provide a great deal of
flexiblity with respect to the instrument’s control parameters.
Temperature control can be accomplished in one of four ways as listed below:
i) On / Off
ii) Proportional only (P)
iii) Proportional + Integral (PI)
iv) Proportional + Integral + Derivative (PID)
PID stands for Proportional, Integral, and Derivative terms.
The Series 800/850 TEC Controllers are designed with DUAL PID control capability, or
two separate sets of control parameters available for cooling and heating. As
described earlier in the manual, internal to the controller are two separate outputs.
These are referred to as channels or outputs interchangably.
The heating parameters take effect when the process temperature is lower than the
set point and the cooling parameters take effect when the process temperature is
higher than the set point. PID 1 parameters apply to Output 1; PID 2 parameters apply
to Output 2. View or change PID 1 and PID 2 parameters in the PID 1 and PID 2
menus (Operations Page).
These outputs or channels are what the controller uses to determine what the final
TEC current output will be. The advantages to this approach are numerous and some
are as follows:
i) Tuning can be accomplished on either channel individually OR both channels can be tuned
at the same time.
ii) In special situations where no Heating is required, the Cooling channel can be turned OFF
iii) Auto tuning Limits can be applied to each channel individually. This can protect a TEC
from over temperature during a tuning process.
