CURRENT DRAIN AND BATTERY CALCULATION
Power consumption
With large installations it is very important to calculate the current drain, to avoid an overload of the control
panel in an alarm situation. Also keep in mind that when the mains power supply fails, the connected battery
should have enough capacity to supply the installation with enough power for the required number of hours.
According to the latest SKAFOR requirements, a security installation should be able to run at least 18 hours
on its battery, and still be able to send out a report 30 minutes later.
The maximal current drains of the AlphaVision NG products are:
AlphaVision NG control panel 130mA
AlphaVision LED keypad 8mA
AlphaVision LCD keypad 9mA
AlphaVision LCD/PROX keypad 50mA
AlphaVision Input + 8 OC module 58mA
AlphaVision wireless interface 43mA
AlphaVision I/O module 74mA
*
AlphaVision Printer module 140mA
Synoptic tablets/interface 10mA (circuit board drain) + 10mA for each LED
AlphaCom ISDN Plug on dialler 150mA
AlphaCom II ISDN dialler in casing 150mA
*
DLM-100 GSM dialler 300mA
*
RO module 50mA
**
*
These products have their own power supplies with back up battery and do not obtain their power from
the RS-485 bus.
**
With activated relay, when relay is not activated 5 mA.
Control panel
The AlphaVision NG control panel can supply 3,0 Ah @12VDC. The battery charging current (max.
500mA) and the circuit board current drain (130mA) should be subtracted from this. The battery is charged
with a stabilized current, which can be adjusted, and is charged through a resistor. By default, the current
value is set to 13,8V.
You can calculate the minimal battery capacity (Ah) by using the following formula:
C20 = 18 x I1 + 0,5 x I2
C20 = Specific battery capacity at 20° C
I1 = Control panel current drain in idle state
I2 = Control panel current drain in alarm state
Example battery calculation
Example 1
AlphaVision NG control panel (130mA) with 1 magnetic contact, 7 detectors (7 x 15mA), 1 LED keypad
(8mA) and 1 LCD keypad (9mA): total current drain in idle state is 252mA. We presume an extra current
drain of 300mA in an alarm situation.
AlphaVision NG installation manual Rev. 2.0 27-08-2003 Blz. 29/101
C20 = 18 x 0.252 + 0.5 x (0.300+0.252) = 4.536 + 0.276 = 4.812Ah ⇒ battery 7,0Ah
