Questions and Answers

Overview

The AMKUS ION Battery Powered Electro-hydraulic Rescue Tools are a complete line of self-contained hydraulic rescue tools designed for extrication and rescue operations. These tools are powered by a 60 Volt battery and feature a brushless direct current (DC) motor that drives a high-pressure pump. Hydraulic fluid from the pump passes through a user-operated control valve, moving a piston that actuates the arms or blades of the tool.

Function Description:

The AMKUS ION tools are designed to perform cutting, spreading, squeezing, and lifting operations in emergency rescue scenarios. They are used to free entrapped victims by manipulating vehicle components or other structural elements. The self-contained hydraulic system eliminates the need for external power units and hoses, offering greater portability and maneuverability.

Usage Features:

  • Battery Management: The tools maintain power until the battery is drained. Users can check battery charge status via indicator lights on the battery by pressing a status button. A "red" status LED or one bar on the indicator suggests a battery change.
  • Power ON/OFF: Press and hold the silver power button momentarily to turn ON (light stays lit). Press and hold for 1 second to turn OFF. The tool automatically powers off after 20 minutes of inactivity.
  • Rotating Handle: ION Cutter and Combi Tools feature a 360° swiveling handle with variable tension. A red latch allows rotation, and tightening a tension screw increases handle tension.
  • Handle Lights: Dual handle lights operate at three intensity levels (low, medium, high) and can be turned OFF. Continuous use time is approximately 60 hours on low. A battery saver function turns lights off after 15 minutes of continuous use.
  • Control Valve Actuator: This actuator has three positions: OPEN, OFF (neutral), and CLOSE. It includes a deadman safety feature that returns it to the OFF position when released, stopping tool movement and holding position/load. The actuator controls the motor and hydraulic pump, with electronics preventing electrical overload.
  • Cutting Operation: To cut, open blades, place them around the object, close to cut, and then open to remove the tool. Maximum cutting forces are achieved nearest the pivot point. Users should be positioned to the side of the cutter to avoid injury from tool rotation or drift.
  • Spreading/Squeezing/Lifting Operation: Rotating the control valve actuator regulates hydraulic flow and power. Turning to end stops provides maximum flow and power. Spreader tips should be positioned to maintain maximum contact with surfaces to prevent instability.
  • Telescopic Ram Operation: The ram has two stages, with the larger diameter first stage providing higher force. The base is removable for extensions. Users must identify the crush zone, position the ram securely, and ensure nearby people are clear of the crush zone. The ram holds the load when the control valve is in OFF (neutral) position and is not for pulling tension loads. The handle position is adjustable.
  • Ram Extensions: Available in 10, 18, and 27-inch lengths (AMK-TCE10, AMK-TCE18, AMK-TCE27). Extensions are installed by aligning dots, pushing, and twisting. Only one extension should be used at a time to prevent instability.
  • Extended Reach Spreader Tips (ERT): Removable tips are interchangeable with standard tips. They are removed by depressing spring-loaded pins and re-installed by sliding them back into place.
  • Chain Use: Chain kits are available for spreaders. Transport chain (3/8" grade 70, working load limit 6600 lbs) is used by securing around the load, removing slack with grab hooks or quick adjust links, and tensioning. Transport chain is NOT rated for overhead lifting.

Maintenance Features:

  • Safety Guards: Tools with moving blades have guards secured by screws, which can be removed for debris clearance during maintenance and reinstalled afterward.
  • Routine Maintenance (After Every Use):
    • Check blades, tips, and arms for wear or damage; replace if damaged.
    • Check the tool for damage, verify operating controls, and remove from service if damaged or inoperable.
  • Routine Maintenance (Every 8 Hours):
    • Ensure all nuts and bolts are secure; tighten to proper torque rating as needed.
  • Annual Maintenance: Annual tool maintenance must be completed regardless of hours of use.
  • Blade Check: Replace blades when worn, cracked, or gouged. Check cutter and combi tool pivot bolt torque monthly (100 ft-lb / 136 N-m).
  • Hydraulic Maintenance: Do not adjust the internal pressure relief valve; user adjustment voids the warranty. Maintenance or adjustment must be performed by a qualified AMKUS repair technician.
  • Motor Maintenance: Keep motor cooling vents clear of obstructions.
  • Lubrication: Cutter blades, combi blades, spreader arms, links, and pins should be lubricated with white lithium grease annually for average service conditions, or more frequently for severe use. Refer to LAA-023 and LIK-056 service procedures.
  • Handle Light Battery Replacement: To replace CR123A batteries in the handle lights, remove lid screws with a 3mm hex key, replace batteries, and re-tighten screws.
  • Troubleshooting: The manual provides troubleshooting guides for motor and hydraulic malfunctions, with remedies categorized for operator (O) or maintenance technician (M) intervention.
  • Inspection, Cleaning, Decontamination, and Storage:
    • Store tools securely in a clean, cool, dry space.
    • Relieve pressure on tools after use.
    • Remove and charge the battery.
    • Before returning to service, inspect for legible markings, cleanliness, and damage/wear.
    • If contaminated, follow decontamination guidelines from the Authority Having Jurisdiction.
    • Any equipment failing the checklist is unsafe and must be corrected before use.
