CHAPTER 4
GETTING
STARTED
THE
GEM
DESKTOP
When
you first turn
on the ST
Computer and load the
TOS System
disk, you’ll
see the
GEM Desktop with
three “icons” (pictures)
along the left
side of
the screen and the
opening Menu Bar along
the top. The Floppy
Disk
icons allow you
to
control
the information
on your
disks. The
Trash icon lets
you dispose of your
unwanted
information. And
the Menu
Bar gives
you access to most of the
utilities
and
applications available
from the
GEM Desktop.
As you get
acquainted with your
ST System, the
GEM Desktop and
its features will
be an important
point of reference
for
you.

The
mouse is
the main
device for
controlling your
ST
Computer.
But you have the
option of
using either
the mouse
or the
cursor
keys
to
manipulate
the
menus.

on
page 19 for
details.
