F-FEM-CNT — Users Guide
7 Glossary and Abbreviations
Add-on
A name for the F-FEM-DIO. It has no IEEE1349 network connection but must be
connected to an F-FEM-DAC, F-FEM-CNT or F-FEM-CON using the add-on
interface.
F-FEM
Acronym for Fast-Front End Module.
These include all FEM that belong to the IEEE1394 family.
F-FEM-AIF
Fast-Front End Module-Analog In Fast with bayonet
F-FEM-AIN
Fast-Front End Module-Analog In without electrical isolation
F-FEM-AIS
Fast-Front End Module-Analog In Isolated with electrical isolation
F-FEM-CNT
Fast-Front End Module-Counter Input
F-FEM-CON
Fast-Front End Module-Controller
F-FEM-DAC
Fast-Front End Module-Digital Analog Converter
F-FEM-DIO
Fast-Front End Module-Digital In Out
F-FEM number
Number used to distinguish the modules (please refer to the F-FEM Paramete-
rization manual, Secondary literature on page 11).
FEM Classic
Generation preceding the F-FEM.
FFDM
F-FEM Download Manager
Hall pick-up
This is a speed encoders with the following characteristics: Its resistance
changes with the magnetic flux density. Using a permanent magnet and a
toothed wheel, it is possible to detect angles and thus measure speed. It is
usually available as a two-track encoder.
IEEE1394
High-speed bus for linking F-FEM modules. Baud rates of 100, 200 or 400 Mbps
are possible. Supports the sychronism of a distributed system by using an isoch-
ronous protocol.
Inductive pick-up
Using a permanent magnet, an inductive pick-up generates a voltage in a coil
over an alternating air gap (toothed wheel). This voltage can be evaluated as
angle pulse or speed. It is usually available as a single-track encoder.
JTAG
Joint Test Action Group
Test methed for checking the production quality and possibilities for commis-
sioning and debugging. Is described in the IEEE1149.1 standard.
Pick-up
Common term for (speed) encoder.
POI
PUMA Operator Interface
PUMA Open
Test bed and instrumentation automation system.
PWM
Pulse width modulation
Repeater
Amplifier and pulse shaper for the extension of lines which carry digital signals. A
repeater acts like an IEEE1394 node.
The entered signal is digitally filtered and then reduced to the desired data rate.
The signal is sampled at a rate that is several times higher than the double band-
width of the signal. Thus, a simple input filter is sufficient.
VCXO
Voltage controlled quartz oscillator, please refer to Fig. 4 on page 17
Zero track
A speed encoder with a zero track (Z) can detect a reference mark. The zero
track indicates e.g. the top dead center (reference pulse).
