Hold Time: The length of time
clamping force is maintained on
the workpiece after ultrasonic
vibration has stopped, allowing
the plastic to solidify.
Horn: Usually a
one-half-wavelength-long bar or
metal section which transfers
vibratory energy to the
workpiece.
Horn Amplitude: The
peak-to-peak displacement of a
horn at its work face.
Insertion: The process of
imbedding a metal component in
plastic.
Interface: 1. The contact surface
of two mating parts.
2. The connection between two
pieces of equipment.
Joint: The weld surfaces.
LED: Light Emitting Diode,
typically serves as an indicator.
Line Speed:The maximum data
rate that can be transmitted
reliably over a line. A telephone
line typically limits the speed to
2400 baud. The rate varies with a
setting in the ECI (Electronic
Communication Interface),
modem, printer, or other device.
Loading meter: A meter which
shows the power drawn from the
power supply.
Mode: One of several methods of
welding.
1.
Energy, Time,
and
Time Energy
Compensated (MC) modes,
all
varieties of plunge mode welding,
in which an actuator extends to
the part to impart a controlled
burst of ultrasonic energy to a part.
2.
Continuous Sonics Mode,
in
which ultrasonic energy from a
fixed horn alters the character of a
material moving relative to that
fixed horn.
3.
Handgun Mode,
in which sonics
are activated with a trigger switch
and no ULS or SV signals are used.
Modem: A contraction of the
words MOdulator-DEModulator. A
device that provides the
appropriate interface between a
communications link and a
computerized system by serving as
a modulator or demodulator. It
"translates" the digital, or
computer-type signals into
voice-type, or analog signals
acceptable to the phone lines, and
reverses the process at the other
end.
Near Field Welding: Welding
within 1/4 inch (6 mm) from the
point of horn's contact with the
workpiece.
Nest: See Fixture.
Parameter: A unique factor or
element which affects the welding
operation in a particular mode.
