Peak power:
A measurement that
examines the maximum level of
power, not the average, during
the weld time.
Plunge:
A mode of welding in
which an actuator bearing an
ultrasonic horn descends to a
part to weld it for a measured
time or for a measured burst of
energy. The horn ascends
automatically to a standby
position when the defined weld
cycle is complete.
Preset:
Storage area where system
parameters (weld parameters and
menu configurations) can reside.
Power control:
Variable
auto-transformer used with a
power supply or welder to
control amplitude at the horn
face.
Power Supply:
The electronic
instrument in an ultrasonic
assembly system which changes
conventional 50/60 Hz electrical
power into high frequency
electrical power at 20 or 40kHz.

Preloading:
Application of a
predetermined load on a part
prior to triggering ultrasonics.
Pretriggering:
Initiation of
ultrasonics before the horn
contacts the part.
Programmer
The electronic
module controlling a machine's
regular actions, jobs, and
indications.
Scaling factor:
A number which
multiplies with a bargraph
indication to yield the percent of
rated power. When you use low
power, a scaling factor greater than
1 lets you see smaller changes
more easily.
Staking:
The process of melting
and reforming a plastic stud to
mechanically lock a dissimilar
material in place.
Swaging:
The process of capturing
another component of an assembly
by melting and reforming a ridge
of plastic.
Thermoplastic:
A polymer which
undergoes a reversible change of
state when subjected to heat.
Thermoset:
A polymer which
undergoes an irreversible change
when subjected to heat.
Time Mode:
Welding continues for
a predetermined length of time.
Time Energy Compensated Mode:
In this mode, if the weld time is
completed but the Minimum
Energy Limit has not been reached,
the welder extends the time up to
50 percent. If the minimum energy
limit is reached, then the weld is
acceptable.
