found in Ciena Corporation documentation.
A
Active
refers to the Control Module that is
operationally controlling the system.
Alarm
is classified as either an audible or visible
warning notice that is triggered by an event or
error condition.
B
Backup
is a redundancy state mode indicating
that the Standby Co ntro l M od ule is re ady to
manage the system in the event that the Active
Contr o l Mo d ule shoul d fa ilo ver .
Broadcast Containment
prevents services
from being disrupted by broadcast storms by
creating Broadcast Containment filters and
appl ying them to VLANs or virtua l switches.
Broadcast Storm
occurs when a large number
of broadcast packets are unnecessarily
propagated across a network which can
degr ad e per fo r m ance o r even deny ser vice.
Broa dca st storm s ar e of ten associa ted with
denial-of-service attacks, n e twork
reconver g ence, and loo p s in the networ k.
C
CES S
(Ca rr ier Ether net Service Switchi ng) is a
de vic e t he prov ide s t he foll owi ng fu n ct ion s: 1)
aggregates, distribu tes and delivers Carrier
Ethernet Business, Residential and Transport
services, fr om the e dge of the metro/core to
the customer , 2) enab les pr o gr am m a bl e
service deliver y, pr o vidin g cap acity,
perfor mance a nd resiliency, through the
integration of Ethernet Services Management
(ESM), com mon Service Awar e Op er atio n
System (SAOS) and programmable network
devices.
Channel Stream
is a collection of user-defined
multicast groups that are flooded to all ports in
a VLAN, brin gin g these stream s fa r d ow n into
the network before they are r equested by an
IGMP host, thus reducing latency.
CIR
(Com m i tted Inf or m atio n Ra te) is a
designated value that represents the minimum
guaranteed bandwidth for network traffic flows
that are transmitted and received under
norm a l op er ating cond itio ns.
Command File
contains a set of instr uctio ns
on how to deliver the various system software
to Ciena switch.
Cond ition
refers to an occurrence within the
system that exists for a period of time that may
be of interest to the user or operator. A
conditi on that per sists fo r an extended p eri od
of tim e ma y be re-cl assif ied as an Event.
COS
(Class of Service) divides services into
differ ent levels of priority in order make
forwarding decisions when network congestion
occurs.
E
Egress
refer s to netwo rk tra ff ic bein g sent out
of a device o r the exit poi nt fro m a netwo r k
device.
EIR
(Excess Infor m a tion R ate) is a designa ted
value, in excess of the CIR, that represents an
allow ance o f bur stab le ba ndw id th for netwo r k
traffic flows that are transmitted and received
under bur sty oper ating cond itio ns.
EPR
(Egress Port Restriction) restr icts cross-
talk between ports on the same device within a
shared VLAN by blo cking ARP messages.
Event
typically re fer s to an err o r co ndi tion in
the system that has an associated severity.
Events can be logged into either the SYSLOG,
RAM, o r C om p act Flash via the event log gin g
system. In addition, some events are
converted into SNMP traps.
