Standard Consist Notes And Tips and FAQs
Decoder Function Control - Only the lead locomotive can have its functions controlled by the
throttle. The other locomotives can not have their functions controlled by the throttle.
Speed Steps - One neat feature of standard consists, is that the Command Station's transmitted
speed steps and the locomotive's speed step settings are maintained for the consisted locomotives.
For example, loco 4600 is set for 14 speed steps. Loco 459 is set for 128 speed steps. When placed
into a standard consist each will continue to receive the sent the proper speed steps.
For an unregistered locomotive, the transmitted speed steps is set to the system default when
added to a standard consist.
Each Consist Counts As An Address - The internal memory (M count on home page) of the
Command Station, maintains a table that has 255 locomotive entries. These entries are for all
locomotive addresses, consist addresses and "consisted" locomotives. All of these count towards
the total number of addresses stored in the table.
Frequently Asked Questions: While standard consists are the easiest to create and use, there are
some unique properties that may seem puzzling. Should you encounter something peculiar,
chances are good, the explanation will be found below.
Can I change the orientation of the consist's lead locomotive? No. The lead locomotive
orientation can not be changed from the default of NORMAL.
If I remove the lead locomotive address from the consist, does this "kill" the entire consist?
No. You must use the KILL command.
Can I have a consist number that does not correspond to a locomotive address? Although the
answer is yes, the decoder functions will no longer work.
Can a locomotive address be assigned to more than one standard consist? Yes. A locomotive
that is added to more than one consist will only have the lowest consist number displayed when
the SHOW LOCO nnnn CONSIST command is used.
Can the SHOW LOCO SPEED command be used to monitor a loco's speed if the loco is in a
standard consist? Yes.
Does removing a loco from a consist remove it from all consists? No. It is only removed from
the specified consists.
What if I try to add a locomotive address to a consist and it is already there? Does it get
added twice? If the locomotive address is already present, the command is simply ignored.
What happens if the maximum number of 8 loco addresses in a consist is reached and I try to
add a ninth address? The command will be ignored. The consist is unchanged.
What happens when I try to delete a loco address from a consist that doesn't exist? The
command will be ignored.
What happens if a loco address is already in an advanced consist and I try to assign it to a
standard consist? A locomotive can not be in both a standard consist and an advanced consist at
the same time. If this is attempted, an error message will be displayed. You need to first remove the
locomotive from the advanced consist, before assigning it to a standard consist.
What happens if a loco address is in a standard consist and I assign it to an advanced
consist? The locomotive will be automatically removed from the standard consist first and then
assigned to the advanced consist. A locomotive can not be in both a standard consist and an
advanced consist at the same time.
What happens when I assign a loco address to a standard consist while it is already in
another standard consist? The locomotive address will be placed into both consists. When used
in standard consists, locomotives can belong to multiple consists at the same time.
