Operating the WheelChair Mover
General description:
The purpose of the WheelChair Mover is to make the wheelchair transportation
process easier, more efficient and enjoyable for both the operator and the patient. In
this section you will be learning how to operate the WheelChair Mover. To use the
WheelChair Mover you must be trained and certified per the Training Manual at the
end of this manual and meet your facilities requirements.
The throttle control levers are between the handlebar grips. Pushing the RH side of
the throttle lever the WheelChair Mover will move forward. By pushing the LH side of
the throttle lever it will move backward. Control the speed of the machine by how far
you depress the throttle.
A wheelchair is connected to the WheelChair Mover by driving the nose of the
WheelChair Mover underneath the back of the wheelchair so that the jaws align with
the vertical wheelchair axle frame. When aligned, push the hitch handle downward
to extend the hitch arms and secure the jaws into place. Verify that the hitch jaws
are fully engaged on every wheelchair, every time by ensuring the fingers of the jaws
extend past the wheelchair frame. If the wheelchair is off center, align the jaws,
push the handle, and extend the arms; simultaneously as you continue to push down
the handle, press the centering foot pedal to secure both sides.
Remove the wheelchair brakes; drive to your destination and on a level surface, stop
and lock the wheelchair brakes.
Disconnect the WheelChair Mover by pulling the latch release with your first finger
as you grasp the entire hitch handle and pull up. This action pulls the arms away
from the wheelchair.
After insuring that the patient and anything connected to the patient is clear of the
WheelChair Mover, back away from the wheelchair.
Detailed description:
1) Make sure the gearbox release lever (on the front right of the machine) is in the
"rear" position. See diagram WheelChair Mover Right Side View (page 15). This
position connects the gearbox to the motor and brake so the machine will not roll
when parked or stopped on ramps. The brake is released electrically when the
throttle is engaged. The machine will make noise (click) but not move while this
lever is in the “forward” position.
