Overview

This document is an instruction manual for the DELTA 14" Band Saws, specifically models 28-206 and 28-276.

Function Description

The DELTA 14" Band Saws are woodworking machines designed for cutting various materials, primarily wood. They utilize a continuous band blade that runs around two wheels, allowing for precise and curved cuts. The machine is equipped with features for adjusting blade tension, tracking, and guide positions to optimize cutting performance and safety. The table can be tilted for angled cuts.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Model 28-206: This model is a 1 Hp, 120/240 volt, 2-speed unit. It features a quick blade-tensioning device and an enclosed stand. The two speeds allow for versatility in cutting different materials and types of work.
  • Model 28-276: This model is a 3/4 Hp, 120/240 volt, 1-speed unit. It also includes a quick blade-tensioning device but comes with an open stand.
  • Blade Length: Both models use 93-1/2" length band saw blades.
  • Blade Speeds (Model 28-206 only):
    • 3300 fpm (feet per minute) for general work.
    • 2500 fpm for resaw work.
    • Speed is changed by repositioning the belt on the two-step motor pulley and saw pulley.
  • Table Tilt: The band saw table can be tilted 45 degrees to the right and 10 degrees to the left, allowing for angled cuts. It also has an adjustable table stop to set the table at 90 degrees to the blade.
  • Electrical Connection: The machines are wired for 120 VOLT, 60 HZ alternating current. A separate electrical circuit protected with a 20 Amp time lag fuse is recommended. Proper grounding is essential for operator safety, requiring a 3-wire extension cord with a 3-prong grounding type plug and matching receptacle.
  • Dust Port: Equipped with a 4" O.D. dust port for connecting to a dust collector, helping to maintain a clean work environment and reduce airborne particles.

Usage Features

  • Safety Guidelines: Emphasizes reading and understanding all warnings and operating instructions. Key safety measures include wearing eye and hearing protection, proper apparel, maintaining a clean work area, keeping children and visitors away, reducing unintentional starting, using guards, removing adjusting keys/wrenches before starting, using the right machine for the job, and using recommended accessories.
  • Grounding Instructions: Details the importance of grounding to protect the operator from electric shock, providing illustrations for 3-prong plugs and temporary adapters (where permitted).
  • Extension Cords: Provides a minimum gauge extension cord chart to ensure proper cord selection based on ampere rating, voltage, and cord length, preventing power loss and overheating.
  • Assembly: Step-by-step instructions for assembling the stand (enclosed for 28-206, open for 28-276), attaching the motor mounting plate, pulley guard, and the saw unit to the stand.
  • Blade Installation and Adjustment: Guides on attaching the blade, ensuring proper tension, and tracking. The quick tension lever simplifies blade tensioning. Blade tracking is adjusted via a thumb screw to keep the blade centered on the upper tire.
  • Blade Guide Adjustment: Detailed instructions for adjusting both upper and lower blade guides and support bearings to ensure the blade is parallel to the guides and the support bearing is correctly positioned behind the blade. This is crucial for accurate cuts and preventing blade damage.
  • Table Tilting: Explains how to loosen locking knobs to tilt the table to the desired angle, with a scale for precise angle setting. Instructions are provided for both right and left tilts, including removing the table stop for left-hand tilting.
  • Starting and Stopping: Features a simple green "START" button and a red "STOP" button.
  • Switch Locking: The power switch can be locked in the "OFF" position using a padlock to prevent unauthorized use.
  • Cutting Curves: Advises on turning stock carefully, using narrower blades for abrupt curves, and making "relief" cuts to prevent blade twisting.
  • Band Saw Blades: Provides guidance on selecting the proper blade width and temper, emphasizing the use of sharp blades and avoiding excessive tension. Lists common causes of blade breakage and how to prevent them.

Maintenance Features

  • Keep Machine Clean: Recommends periodically blowing out air passages with dry compressed air and cleaning plastic parts with a soft damp cloth. Warns against using solvents on plastic parts.
  • Lubrication: Suggests applying household floor paste wax to the machine table and extension table weekly.
  • Protecting Cast Iron from Rust: Provides a specific procedure for cleaning and protecting cast iron surfaces using a pushblock, Scotch-Brite™ pad, WD-40®, degreaser, and TopCote® Aerosol.
  • Troubleshooting Guide: A comprehensive section to help users diagnose and solve common problems such as the saw not starting, breaker kicking out frequently, excessive vibration, blades breaking, blade not tracking, inaccurate tilt scale settings, blade not staying on the wheel, and unsatisfactory cuts. Each problem lists probable causes and corresponding remedies.
  • Blade Care: Emphasizes using sharp blades, keeping them free from gum and pitch, and adjusting blade guides properly. Recommends replacing blades rather than re-sharpening for better performance.
  • Tension Release: Advises releasing blade tension when the machine is not in use to prevent over-straining and breakage.
