A Series Diesel Engine Air System 103
To verify oil leakage past the seals, remove the
exhaust pipe and crossover tube and look for oil in the
turbine casing and the crossover tube. Locate and
correct the restriction as previously discussed.
Turbocharger Noise
It is normal for the turbocharger to emit a “whine”
sound that varies in intensity depending on engine
speed and load. The sound is caused by the very high
rotational speed of the rotor assembly. Consequently,
the sound will be more audible at full speed.
Note: If possible, operate the engine at full speed to
verify the noise level.
Leaks in the air system, both intake and exhaust
components, can produce additional noises.
Check the air intake and crossover tube leaks.
Note : Before removing a turbocharger, make sure
that the noise complaint is not caused by leaks
in the air system components.
Look for loose turbocharger mounting, exhaust
manifold gasket leaks, and cracks in the exhaust
manifold.
