Overview

The Dräger Fabius series, including the Fabius GS, Fabius GS premium, Fabius Tiro, and Fabius OS, can be optionally configured with a Heated Breathing System (HBSPS) to mitigate moisture condensation within the breathing circuit. This supplement provides detailed instructions for the installation, operation, and maintenance of this optional system, ensuring safe and effective use.

Function Description

The primary function of the Heated Breathing System is to reduce the condensation of moisture within the patient breathing circuit. By gently heating the breathing gas, the system helps maintain a more consistent temperature and humidity level, which can be beneficial in preventing the accumulation of water in the tubing and other components. This reduction in condensation can lead to several advantages, including minimizing the risk of patient airway irritation, improving the accuracy of gas measurements by preventing water interference, and potentially reducing the frequency of draining water traps. The system is designed to integrate seamlessly with the existing Fabius anesthesia machine, providing a controlled heating element that works in conjunction with the compact breathing system (COSY). The HBSPS is a power supply unit that delivers the necessary electrical energy to the heating elements located within the COSY, ensuring that the breathing gas remains at an optimal temperature.

Usage Features

The HBSPS is designed for straightforward installation and operation, making it a practical addition to the Fabius anesthesia workstation. Installation involves mounting the power supply unit onto the GCX rail of the Fabius machine, whether it's a left-mount or right-mount COSY configuration, or a wall-mounted setup. The power cable for the heater is then routed and connected to the COSY arm, with specific instructions provided for cable management to ensure a tidy and secure setup. The connection is made via a mating connector on the rear underside of the COSY, with a red mark alignment feature to ensure correct orientation.

Once installed, operating the HBSPS is simple. The user plugs the power cord into a mains power outlet, which illuminates a green "MAINS POWER" LED on the HBSPS unit, indicating that power is supplied. The "HEATER POWER" switch is then toggled to the ON position, which activates the heating element and illuminates a corresponding "HEATER POWER ON" LED. After approximately 15 to 30 minutes, the underside of the COSY should feel slightly warm, confirming that the system is functioning correctly.

A critical warning associated with the HBSPS emphasizes the importance of not allowing the CO2 absorbent to dry out. The manual highlights that when moisture content falls below a specified minimum level, undesirable reactions can occur, such as reduced CO2 absorption, formation of carbon monoxide, absorption and/or decomposition of anesthetic agents, and increased heat generation in the absorber. These reactions can lead to serious patient risks, including CO intoxication, insufficient depth of anesthesia, and airway burns. Therefore, it is recommended to turn off the heater when the system is not in use to prevent the absorbent from drying out.

Maintenance Features

The maintenance of the HBSPS primarily involves routine checks and troubleshooting, as well as proper preparation for disinfection and cleaning of the compact breathing system.

For daily checkout, the user is instructed to perform several checks to ensure the HBSPS is operating correctly:

  • Calibrate the flow sensor.
  • Check all cable connections, including the power cord.
  • Verify that the "MAINS POWER" LED on the HBSPS is illuminated.
  • Ensure the "HEATER POWER" switch is in the "ON" position.
  • Confirm that the "HEATER POWER ON" LED is illuminated.
  • After 30 minutes, check that the underside of the COSY is warm (approximately 35-40°C), indicating proper heating.

Troubleshooting guidance is provided for common issues. If the COSY is not warm after 30 minutes, the user should check the "HEATER POWER" switch position, confirm the "HEATER POWER ON" LED is illuminated, ensure the connector to the COSY is properly plugged in, and verify that the "MAINS POWER" LED is illuminated and the power cord is connected to a functioning wall outlet.

If the "HEATER POWER ON" LED is not illuminated while the "MAINS POWER" LED is on, the user should check the fuse on the HBSPS unit. If the fuse is blown, it must be replaced with a properly rated fuse.

If the "MAINS POWER" LED is not illuminated, the user should check the wall outlet, the power supply-end cord plug, and the two fuses in the power inlet assembly. Blown fuses should be replaced. For any problems that cannot be resolved through these steps, the user is advised to contact their local Authorized Service Organization or DrägerService.

Preparing the compact breathing system for disinfection and cleaning involves a series of steps to disconnect all associated components from the machine. This includes leaving the Dräger Vapor(s) on the machine, removing all breathing hoses, the breathing bag, ventilation hose, fresh gas hose, anesthetic scavenging hose, APL-bypass and Peep/Pmax lines, flow sensor cable, and O2 sensor cable. Crucially, the optional Heated Breathing System Power Supply (HBSPS) power must be turned off, and its power cable disconnected from the breathing system before removing the compact breathing system. The manual states that the same information for disinfection, cleaning, and autoclaving applies to the breathing system with heater as for the standard breathing system, as detailed in the main Fabius Operator's Instruction Manual. Cleaning and disinfection of the mains adapter should also follow the procedures described in the Fabius Operator's Instruction Manual under "Machine (exterior)."
