Overview

The document describes the Dynamic Controls RHINO2 scooter control system, focusing on its features, specifications, and the procedure for converting an existing Rhino-based scooter system to a RHINO2 system.

Function Description:

The RHINO2 family of scooter controllers provides a reliable, refined, and cost-effective control solution for most mobility scooters. It is designed to manage various aspects of scooter operation, including motor control, battery management, and user interface functions. The system aims to enhance the performance, stability, and safety of mobility scooters. The conversion guide specifically details how to retrofit a RHINO2 system into a scooter previously equipped with a Rhino controller, involving both cable adaptation and parameter programming.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Models and Current Capability: The RHINO2 system offers various models with different current capabilities:

    • DS90: RHINO2 90A Controller
    • DS90-ACT: RHINO2 90A Controller with actuator
    • DS120: RHINO2 120A Controller
    • DS120-ACT: RHINO2 120A Controller with actuator
    • DS160: RHINO2 160A Controller
    • DS160-ACT: RHINO2 160A Controller with actuator These models provide power ranging from 90A to 160A, catering to different power requirements of scooters. The RHINO2's current capability is noted to be higher than that of the original Rhino controllers, necessitating careful parameter settings during conversion to prevent damage or injury.
  • Ingress Protection: The controllers feature IP54 ingress protection, with an optional separately available aluminum terminal cover that increases protection to IP55 when fitted. This indicates resistance to dust and splashing water.

  • Compliance: The RHINO2 system is compliant with EU Directive 2002/95/EC of 27 Jan. 2003 (RoHS), restricting the use of hazardous substances.

  • Battery Configuration: The system supports automatic battery configuration and provides 5V and 12V battery capacity outputs (TruCharge™).

  • Connectivity:

    • Programming: The RHINO2 requires specific adaptors (DWIZ-ADAPT and DR-PRGLM02) for programming with a Wizard programming tool or a DX-HHP (hand-held programmer). It does not support older DS Hand-Held Programmers (DS2K-PD, DS2K-PM, etc.).
    • External Battery Charger Socket: Can be wired to either the 14-pin tiller head connector or the 4-pin Battery Charger connector. An industry-standard 3-pin XLR connector can be used for external battery chargers, also enabling programming and diagnostics if the inhibit pin is connected correctly.
    • Logic Connector: The RHINO2 uses a 14-way logic connector, while Rhino used an 8-way. Adaptor looms (GLM51987) are necessary for conversion, mapping functions like key switch, throttle inputs, beeper output, speed reduction wiper, forward-reverse input, and charging inhibit.
  • Motor and Battery Cable Adaptors: The RHINO2 uses different cable connectors than Rhino, requiring specific adaptor looms (e.g., GLM51981, GLM51983, GLM51984, GLM51985, GLM51986) for motor, park brake, and battery connections depending on the specific Rhino and RHINO2 models. Terminal kits (GSM51982, GSM51988, GSM51989) are also available for re-terminating existing looms.

Usage Features:

  • Programmable Acceleration Curves: Improved rollback on slopes and enhanced motor matching algorithms contribute to better curb-climbing and hill-starting capabilities.
  • Speed Reduction Wiper (SRW) Technology: Provides seamless speed reduction in curves for extra stability. This functionality is available on pin 4 of the 14-way tiller head connector.
  • Drive Profiles: Supports two drive profiles, allowing for different performance characteristics.
  • Lighting and Sound: Includes brake and reverse lights, and a reversing beeper.
  • Electronic Park Brake Release: Facilitates easy disengagement of the park brake.
  • Optional Actuator Output: Features an optional single actuator output with Wig-wag or dedicated switch activation.
  • Throttle Control: Parameters for throttle input (single), throttle neutral offset, full scale deflection, and response can be configured. The Speed Limit Pot can be set to "Yes" if a speed potentiometer is wired to pin 9 of the 14-way tiller head connector.
  • Drive Performance: Adjustable parameters for acceleration and deceleration, including soft start and soft finish periods, to meet specific scooter requirements and ensure smooth operation.
  • Speed Settings: Forward Speed, Reverse Speed, and Reduce Speed parameters can be set, translating into percentages of maximum speed. The Maximum Motor Voltage parameter is also configurable.
  • Forward-Reverse Input: Pin 12 of the RHINO2's tiller head connector is recommended for the Forward-Reverse function.
  • Status LED: The Key Switch Status LED parameter can be programmed to "Yes" if a Status LED is wired in series with the key switch.

Maintenance Features:

  • Intelligent Motor and Battery Management: Provides automatic power flow optimization, auto battery configuration, and in-depth battery logging and analysis tools.
  • Advanced Diagnostics and Servicing Tools: Includes event and drive time logging, and a programmable servicing scheduler.
  • User Serviceability: The product is explicitly stated as not user serviceable, requiring specialized tools for repair by authorized personnel.
  • Documentation: The manual emphasizes the importance of reading and understanding all relevant scooter component manuals, including the RHINO2 Installation Manual, for proper installation, setup, operation, and maintenance.
  • Warranty: Any attempt to gain access to or abuse the electronic components voids the manufacturer's warranty.
  • Product Improvement: Dynamic Controls reserves the right to update the manual and change the product without notification due to continuous product improvement.
