in nearby tissue can cause irreversible damage. the movement of
electrically charged ions in capacitive coupled tissue can cause currents
thatcanheattissuesufficientlytoproduceburns.
Several measures are used during electrosurgical operations to limit and
minimizetherisksofpatientinjury:
- abetterandmorecompletetrainingfo
rthemedicalstaff;
- visualexaminationofthesurgicalinstrumentation(activeelectrode,
laparoscope);
- use of disposable electrodes (but the thinner insulation doesn’t
reducetheriskofbreakdownorcapacitivecoupling);
- prohibitingtheuseofhybrid(plastic‐metal)cannulas;
- adopting bipolar electro surgery (not‐versatile, but safer, because
the necrosis happ
en only if there is a long and continuous
applicationofthecurrent).
IntheHFelectrosurgeryburnsarearealhazardthatcanbeminimizedby
the knowledge of the causes and especially if the surgeon is prepared
