Do you have a question about the EVBox Audi Wallbox and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The Audi Wallbox is an electric vehicle charging station designed for home use, distributed by Elli – a brand of the Volkswagen Group. It comes in three models: Audi Wallbox, Audi Wallbox plus, and Audi Wallbox pro, offering varying levels of connectivity and advanced features.

Function Description

The primary function of the Audi Wallbox is to provide a safe and efficient means of charging electric vehicles (EVs) at home. It supports Mode 3 (IEC 61851) AC charging processes. The Wallbox plus and pro models offer smart charging functionalities, which can be configured via a Configuration Manager and the myAudi app. These smart features include internet connectivity (Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or LTE for the pro model), access control via RFID charge cards, remote access and software updates via the myAudi app, and data transfer to the Audi Backend. The Audi Wallbox pro also includes a MID-certified kWh meter for power consumption recording and calculation.

A key feature of the Audi Wallbox plus and pro is the Overload Protection system. This system aims to maximize the charging power available to the EV while ensuring that the total electrical load of the house (residential load plus charging power) does not exceed the local power supply limits. This is achieved by installing Current Transformer (CT) coils at critical points in the house's electrical installation, which monitor the residential load. The wallbox then dynamically adjusts the charging power based on these measurements, preventing overloads and allowing for the fastest possible charging speed without tripping breakers.

Usage Features

  • Start and Stop Charging: Charging can be initiated by connecting the charging cable to the vehicle. For Wallbox plus and pro models, it can also be started by holding a charge card in front of the reader or using the myAudi app. Stopping follows a similar process: disconnect the cable, or use a charge card/myAudi app for Wallbox plus and pro.
  • Status Indication: An LED-based HMI provides clear visual cues for the wallbox's operational status, vehicle connection, house state, and RFID activity. Different colors and flashing patterns indicate various states such as energy saving, starting up, configuration manager accessibility, idle, charging, paused, authorization pending/rejected, software update in progress, and error states.
  • Configuration Manager: For Wallbox plus and pro models, a local Configuration Manager is accessible via a Wi-Fi Hotspot (active upon power-up) or the local network (after initial setup). This tool allows users or certified electricians to establish an internet connection (Wi-Fi or LAN), set personal preferences (language, login password, charge card usage), and configure Overload Protection parameters.
  • myAudi App Integration (Wallbox plus and pro): Users can link their wallbox to their myAudi app account to access online services, including remote access, charging history, and management of charging cards for access control.
  • Adjustable Cable Length: The length of the charging cable can be adjusted by loosening and tightening two screws of the cable strain relief, allowing for customization to the installation environment.

Maintenance Features

  • Software Updates: The wallbox receives automatic software updates, which require approval via the myAudi app. Users can choose to install or reject updates, though rejecting may impact security and functionality. Information on updates is available on the Elli website.
  • Cleaning: The exterior of the wallbox can be cleaned with a damp, soft cloth.
  • Charge Plug Inspection: The charge plug should be regularly checked for damage and foreign matter and cleaned by a certified electrician.
  • Regular Inspection: The wallbox and its installation should be inspected regularly by a certified electrician in compliance with local country installation guidelines.
  • Troubleshooting: The manual provides detailed troubleshooting guidance based on LED status indications, covering issues such as charging not possible, over-temperature derating, loss of communication with HEMS, self-test failures, loss of protective earth, relay state mismatch, invalid vehicle communication, and remote inoperability.
  • Factory Reset: The Configuration Manager allows for a factory reset, which restores all settings to their default values, but also deletes all personal data and custom settings.
  • Decommissioning: Instructions are provided for safely turning off input power, removing the bezel and front cover, disconnecting cables, and dismounting the wallbox in reverse order of installation.
