Checking the front brake uid
level
1
1. Minimum level mark
Insucient brake uid may allow air to
enter the brake system, possibly caus-
ing it to become ineective.
Before riding, check that the break uid
is above the minimum level mark and
rell it if necessary. Low position brake uid
level may indicate worn brake pads and/
or brake system leakage. If the brake
uid level is low, be sure to check the
brake pads for wear and the brake sys-
tem for leakage.
Observe these precautions:
t When checking the uid level,
make sure that the top of the mas-
ter cylinder is level by turning the
handlebars.
t Use only the recommended qual-
ity brake uid, otherwise the rub-
ber seals may deteriorate, causing
leakage and poor braking perfor-
mance.
Recommended brake uid:
DOT 4
t Rell with the same type of brake
uid. Mixing uids may result in a
harmful chemical reaction and lead
to poor braking performance.
t Be careful that water does not en-
ter the master cylinder when rell-
ing. Water will signicantly lower the
boiling point of the uid and may
result in vapor lock.
t Brake uid may deteriorate painted
surfaces or plastic parts. Always
clean up spilled uid immediately.
t As the brake pads wear, it is nor-
mal for the brake uid level to
gradually go down. However, if the
brake uid level goes down sud-
denly, have a Explorer dealer check.
Changing the brake uid
Have a Explorer dealer change the
brake uid at the intervals specied in
the NOTE after the periodic mainte-
nance and lubrication chart.
