Appendix B Working with External Tandem
Volumes
There are multiple ways to work with External Tandem (Raid50/51) volumes. These are
outlined below.
Multi-user Write
To work with External tandem Multi-user Write volumes you must have two or more Facilis
TerraBlock servers connected via fibre channel. Fibre channel is a requirement because
the volume pieces from other servers outside the owner will need to mount as Single-user
Write.
To create a Multi-user Write volume as Raid 50/51 open the create volume dialogue on
the server. From the server list choose tandem and select groups from your server list
across multiple boxes. Select Multi-user Write as the mount type. In the DynaRAID
column select the desired raid type and choose ok. You will be prompted for which server
to create the volume on. The server chosen will mount the volume pieces from the other
servers as Single-user Write and mount its own piece as Multi-user Write.
Single-user Write
Single-user Write Raid50/51 volumes are supported for windows fibre channel attached
systems only. The windows clients will require the installation of the Facilis FastRAID
driver. This is the striping driver that allows the functionality. Contact
support@facilis.com for assistance.
To create a Single-user Write RAID 50/51 volume follow the procedure of creating the
volume as Multi-user Write on the server. Once format is completed change the mount
type of the main piece of the volume to Single-user Write. Or from the client create the
volume with a Single-user Write mount type. Any Windows machine with the FastRAID
driver installed will now be able to mount the volume.
Hub Server / Add Attach
New in version 7 you have the ability to add a Hub server for bandwidth aggregation. This
allows you to maximize bandwidth in multi server environments by attaching multiple
servers over fibre channel to a head unit or Hub Server. See the Facilis Hub Server
Guide or contact support@facilis.com for additional setup information.
On the Hub Server create volumes as Single-user Write. The Hub server will automatically
pick up the volume and create a second entry for the volume. This is the add attach
piece. Assign desired permissions to this piece for clients to access.
