Overview

This document describes the Funkwerk OPH handheld, a GSM-R (Global System for Mobile Communications – Railway) device designed for operational communications within the GB Rail Network. It supports both analogue and digital operation modes, providing essential communication tools for trackside workers. The device is intended for business use only by authorized personnel who have been briefed on its operation.

Function Description

The Funkwerk OPH handheld serves as a critical communication device for trackside workers, enabling them to make and receive calls, send messages, and interact with various operational terminals. Its primary function is to facilitate safe and efficient communication within the GSM-R network.

  • Call Management: The device supports point-to-point calls, group calls, and broadcast calls. Users can initiate calls by dialing a number directly or selecting contacts from the phonebook. It also features call hold functionality, allowing users to place an existing call on hold to initiate or receive another. Incoming calls are indicated by an attention tone and a status message.
  • Emergency Calls: The handheld is equipped with an emergency button for initiating GSM-R emergency calls (REC), although this feature is currently disabled. In situations where the key guard is activated, only emergency calls can be sent using the emergency call button or by dialing 999.
  • Messaging: The device supports sending and receiving text messages and flash messages. Flash messages appear immediately on the recipient's device, while text messages are stored in an inbox. Users can create new messages, reply to received messages, or forward them to other recipients. The device can handle messages longer than the character limit for a single message by sending them as two or more messages.
  • Operational Terminal Calling: Trackside workers can call specific operational terminals such as the Signaller, Route Controller, and ECR (Emergency Call Responder) using either short codes or their full terminal phone numbers. This ensures direct and rapid communication with key personnel for operational safety and coordination.
  • Phonebook: A comprehensive phonebook allows users to store and manage contacts, including adding new entries, editing existing ones, and deleting contacts. The phonebook can store contacts on both the SIM card and the handheld itself.
  • Settings Adjustment: Users can customize various settings to suit their personal needs, including general settings like language, date/time, and display brightness. Message settings, such as validity period and delivery reports, can also be configured.

Usage Features

The Funkwerk OPH handheld is designed for ease of use in a demanding trackside environment, featuring a clear display, tactile buttons, and intuitive navigation.

  • Display and Interface: The device features a display field that shows the current time, network status, battery status, and various pictograms indicating call status (e.g., incoming call, call on hold, group call, emergency call). The status field also displays information about unread text messages and missed calls.
  • Navigation and Keyboard: Navigation buttons allow users to move through submenus and selections. A full keyboard enables direct input of numbers and characters. Left-hand and right-hand selection buttons perform functions displayed directly above them on the screen.
  • Power Management: The device can be switched on and off by pressing and holding the Exit button. It performs a self-test upon startup and requires a PIN code for access. The battery status is clearly displayed, indicating the available charging capacity.
  • Keyboard Lock: The keyboard can be locked manually to prevent accidental inputs. This feature is activated or deactivated by pressing the navigation up arrow followed by the Asterisk (*) button. When locked, only emergency calls can be made.
  • Audio Features: The handheld is equipped with a loudspeaker for hands-free use and a high/low volume rocker switch to adjust loudness for both the handset (earphone) and hands-free function. The PTT (Push-to-Talk) button is available for semi-duplex communication in GSM-R.
  • Menu System: The main menu provides access to various functions, including Messages, Protocols (call history), Phonebook, Setup (settings), and Registration (for train driver versions). The menu is designed for quick access to required functions with minimal steps.

Maintenance Features

Proper maintenance and care are essential to ensure the longevity and reliable operation of the Funkwerk OPH handheld.

  • Battery Care: The battery must be fully charged before initial use. Only rechargeable batteries supplied by Network Rail Telecom should be used. Regular recharging is recommended, especially if the device is stored for extended periods, to prevent slow discharge.
  • Storage: When not in use, the handheld should be stored in its original packaging or non-conductive packaging to protect it from moisture and dirt.
  • Environmental Protection: The device should be protected from extreme weather conditions and not exposed to strong magnetic fields.
  • Damage and Malfunction: If the handheld is damaged or not in perfect working order, it must be switched off immediately and tested by authorized personnel. It should not be used in such conditions.
  • Charger Use: Only chargers supplied by Network Rail Telecom should be used. Damaged chargers must not be used; if a charger is damaged during use, the power should be turned off, and it should be disconnected from the handset before unplugging.
  • Warranty and Returns: The GSM-R handhelds are warranted for 12 months against manufacturing defects. All warranty issues are handled by contacting the help desk, which provides a return number. Failed handhelds should be returned without the battery and SIM. If a unit is found to have "No Defect Found" after testing, a handling charge may apply. Breakage and out-of-warranty repairs typically result in replacement with new units at the user's cost, as the handhelds are sealed units and not commercially viable to repair.
  • Network Support: While the GSM-R network is designed to support calls between Cab Radios and Signallers, and hand-portables generally receive good trackside coverage, Network Rail Telecom provides this service on a "Best Endeavours" basis and does not track reports of poor coverage.
