GE MEDICAL SYSTEMS CT 9800 QUICK SYSTEM
Rev. 1 Direction 18000

ARGUS GENERAL INFORMATION:
The Argus drive contains 16 extra sectors for every cylinder to allow handling of bad blocks. When a new bad
sector is detected, the defective sector is written with a code to skip that sector. When the Argus Micro-Eclipse
encounters the bad sector, it skips that sector and finds the next good replacement. This skipping can be done
up to 16 times (16 Spare sectors). When the next bad sector is encountered ( the 17th on the same cylinder) the
program 6239_FMTR will report a Hardware Check Error. When this occurs, it is more than likely due to a
defective HDA.
Technically speaking, the Argus can handle up to 12,576 bad sectors since there are 16 spare sectors per
cylinder and 786 user cylinders. New bad blocks could be caused by microscopic particulate matter contamination
within the HDA. For this reason, the care and handling of the drive is very important.
1. NEVER move the drive without first installing the Head Lock Bolt otherwise the heads will skate out over the
media and damage will result.
2. Also, the foam intake filter must be kept clean to prevent restriction of air flow and excessive temperature
build up inside the HDA.
