Why do I smell smoke in the house when using my Heatilator Indoor Fireplace?
    • C
      Christopher WaltonAug 10, 2025
If you smell smoke in the house during operation of your Heatilator Indoor Fireplace, make sure the damper is fully open. Check and clean the chimney if needed. Use adequate kindling and fuel. You may also try opening the glass doors or a window, and check for the need for balanced air make-up. It might also be caused by not enough kindling and/or fuel to establish a draft, so ensure you are using enough. Building the fire too close to the front can also cause this, so build the fire farther back. Avoid competition with exhaust devices, and don't use exhaust fans during startup or check for the need for a balanced air make-up system.

How to get more heat from my Heatilator Indoor Fireplace?
    • R
      Robert PrattAug 16, 2025
To get more heat from your Heatilator Indoor Fireplace, make larger fires and burn seasoned wood that has been covered on top, split, and stacked for 9 months to 2 years. Be aware of the decorative nature of the fireplace; consider an approved fireplace insert if your expectations are not met.

What to do if my Heatilator Indoor Fireplace burns wood too fast?
    • L
      Linda BellAug 20, 2025
If your Heatilator Indoor Fireplace burns wood too fast, you may need to slow the air intake by adding glass doors. The wood might also be extremely dry; in this case, mix in less seasoned wood after the fire is established.

Why do I smell smoke after using my Heatilator Indoor Fireplace?
    • R
      Richard MoodyAug 26, 2025
If you smell smoke in the house after using your Heatilator Indoor Fireplace, close the damper at the end of the burn to prevent down drafts or negative pressure. If negative pressure from exhaust fans or house stack effect is the cause, check for the need for glass doors, a balanced air make-up system, or raising the chimney. If it's a creosote odor, have the chimney cleaned. If the damper was closed too early, wait until the fire is completely out before closing it.

Why does my Heatilator A36C Indoor Fireplace fire burn too fast?
    • J
      Joseph GonzalezSep 5, 2025
If your Heatilator Indoor Fireplace's fire burns too fast, it might be due to extremely dry or soft wood. Try mixing in some hardwood. You could also mix in less seasoned wood after the fire is established. If you don't have glass doors, adding them can slow down the airflow. Overdrafting can also be the cause, so check for correct vent height. Also, check the location of vent termination.

Why can't I get the fire started in my Heatilator A36C?
    • D
      david90Dec 1, 2025
If you can't get the fire started in your Heatilator Indoor Fireplace and notice excessive smoke, slow burning, or smoldering, there are several possible causes. First, ensure you're using enough dry kindling and paper, arranged to allow air movement. Make sure the damper is fully open and that there are no obstructions in the cap or shroud restricting airflow. If you have an air kit, open it. Check for any blockages in the flue. Pre-warm the flue before starting the fire. Ensure adequate vent height. Try opening a window below the fireplace towards the wind. Use dry, seasoned wood and establish a bed of coals before adding more wood. Have the chimney inspected and cleaned for creosote or blockages. Avoid using exhaust fans during start-up, and open a window below the fireplace towards the...
