7.9 GARMIN AUTOMATIC FLIGHT CONTROL SYSTEM (AFCS)
The Garmin AFCS is provided as an optional upgrade for the A5-B if
equipped with the Garmin G3X Touch™ display. The AFCS system
can be divided into three main operating functions:
1) Flight Director (FD)—Flight director operation takes place
within the GDU 450 flight display. Flight director commands
are displayed on the PFD to provide command bars showing
pitch/roll guidance, vertical/lateral mode selection and
processing, and autopilot communication.
2) Autopilot (AP)—Autopilot operation occurs within installed
pitch and roll servos. It also provides servo monitoring and
automatic flight control in response to flight director steering
commands, Air Data and Attitude and Heading Reference
System (ADAHRS) attitude, rate information, and airspeed.
3) Manual Electric Trim (MET)—Manual electric trim provides
trim capability for the pitch axis when the autopilot is not
engaged.
For details on operation and use of the Garmin AFCS, see the
following document which is supplied with your aircraft.
