
Thisdirect‐ventappliancemustbeinstalledbyalicensedprofessional.Ifyouarenotproperlytrained,you
mustnotinstallthisunit.
IMPORTANT: IntheStateofMassachuses(248CMR4.00&5.00)
Forallsidewallhorizontallyventedgasfueledequipmentinstalledineverydwelling,buildingor
structureusedinwholeorinpartforresidenalpurposes,includingthoseownedoroperatedbythe
Commonwealthandwherethesidewallexhaustventterminaonislessthanseven(7)feetabove
finishedgrad
eintheareaofthevenng,includingbutnotlimitedtodecksandporches,thefollowing
requirementsshallbesasfied:
1. INSTALLATIONOFCARBONMONOXIDEDETECTORS.Atthemeofinstallaonofthesidewall
horizontalventedgasfueledequipment,theinstallingplumberorgasfiershallobservetha
tahard
wiredcarbonmonoxidedetectorwithanalarmandbaeryback‐upisinstalledonthefloorlevel
wherethegasequipmentistobeinstalled.Inaddion,theinstallingplumberorgasfiershall
observethatabaeryoperatedorhar
dwiredcarbonmonoxidedetectorwithanalarmisinstalledon
eachaddionallevelofthedwelling,buil dingorstructureservedbythesidewallhorizontalvented
gasfueledequipment.Itshallbetheresponsibilityofthepropertyownertosecuretheservicesof
qualifiedlicensedprofessionalsfortheinstallaonofhardwir
edcarbonmonoxidedetectors
a. Intheeventthatthesidewallhorizontallyventedgasfueledequipmentisinstalledinacrawl
spaceoranac,thehardwiredcarbonmonoxidedetectorwithalarmandbaeryback‐upmay
beinstalledonthenextadjacentfloorlevel.
b. Intheeventthattherequirementsofth
issubdivisioncannotbemetatthemeofcompleonof
installaon,theownershallhaveaperiodofthirty(30)daystocomplywiththeabove
requirements;provided,however,thatduringsaidthirty(30)dayperiod,abaeryoperated
carbonmono
xidedetectorwithanalarmshallbeinstalled.
2. APPROVEDCARBONMONOXIDEDETECTORS.Eachcarbonmonoxidedetectorasrequiredin
accordancewiththeaboveprovisionsshallcomplywithNFPA720andbeANSI/UL2034listedandIAS
cerfied.
3. SIGNAGE.Ametalorplascidenfi caonplateshallbeperman
entlymountedtotheexteriorofthe
buildingataminimumheightof eight(8)feetabovegradedirectlyinlinewiththeexhaustvent
terminalforthehorizontallyventedgasfueledheangapplianceorequipment.Thesignshallread,in
printsizenole
ssthanone‐half(1/2)inchinsize,"GASVENTDIRECTLYBELOW.KEEPCLEAROFALL
OBSTRUCTIONS".
4. INSPECTION.Thestateorlocalgasinspectorofthesidewallhorizontallyventedgasfueled
equipmentshallnotapprovetheinstallaonunless,uponinspecon,theinspectorobservescarbon
monoxidede
tectorsandsignageinstalledinaccordancewiththeprovisions of248CMR5.08(2)(a)1
through4.
