Overview

The Jandy® Pro Series Single Element Cartridge Pool & Spa CS Filters are designed to provide efficient and reliable filtration for swimming pools and spas. Unlike traditional sand or diatomaceous earth (DE) filters, these cartridge filters utilize a removable filter cartridge element to collect debris and suspended particles from the water. This design simplifies maintenance and eliminates the need for backwashing, making them a convenient choice for pool and spa owners.

Function Description

The primary function of the Jandy CS Filter is to purify pool and spa water by removing dirt, debris, and other suspended particles. Water enters the filter tank and is directed through the filter cartridge. As water flows through the cartridge, debris is trapped on its surface, while clean water passes through the central filter core and exits the filter through the lower manifold, returning to the swimming pool or spa.

The filtration process is continuous as long as the pump is operating. Over time, as debris accumulates on the cartridge surface, the pressure inside the filter will gradually rise, and the water flow to the pool will diminish. A pressure gauge, prominently located on the filter, serves as the primary indicator of the filter's operational status. The gauge features a "CLEAN" and "DIRTY" snap ring, allowing the user to easily identify when the filter cartridge requires cleaning. When the pressure gauge needle aligns with the "DIRTY" arrow, indicating an increase of 10 to 12 psi above the initial clean pressure, it's time to clean the cartridge.

The filter system is designed for use in a pool or spa installation and should not be connected to an unregulated city water system or any external source producing pressures greater than 35 PSI. Operating the filter above its maximum working pressure of 50 PSI can lead to product failure, including the lid being blown off, which poses a serious safety hazard.

Usage Features

  • Easy Installation: The Jandy CS Filters are designed for straightforward installation. They should be placed on a firm, solid, and level concrete slab or platform to prevent settlement. Adequate clearance around the filter is necessary for visual inspection of the clamp ring and for maintenance access. Electrical controls should be installed at least five feet away from the filter to ensure safety during start-up.
  • Plumbing Connections: The filter includes universal unions for connecting to the water conditioning system, facilitating future servicing. Two-inch (minimum) piping is recommended for plumbing to minimize pressure losses and maximize efficiency. Silicone-based lubricants should be used on O-rings to prevent damage during assembly.
  • Start-Up Procedure: Before starting the pump, it is crucial to ensure all air is bled from the system. This involves filling the pump basket with water to prime the system and opening the air release valve on top of the filter until a steady stream of water emerges. The pressure gauge should be monitored during start-up to ensure it does not exceed 50 PSI.
  • Pressure Gauge Monitoring: The pressure gauge is a critical component for safe and efficient operation. Users are instructed to set the "CLEAN" arrow on the bezel ring to align with the needle when the filter is clean. As the filter collects debris, the pressure will rise, and when the needle reaches the "DIRTY" arrow, it signals that cleaning is necessary.
  • Winterizing: For seasonal pools or spas, the filter can be easily winterized. This involves turning off the pump, opening the air release valve, loosening the drain nut and cap to empty the tank, and draining the entire circulation system of water. Covering the system with a tarpaulin or plastic sheet protects it from the elements during the off-season.

Maintenance Features

  • Cartridge Cleaning: The primary maintenance task for the Jandy CS Filter is cleaning the cartridge element. This involves turning off the pump, releasing all air pressure from the tank via the air release valve, and draining the filter tank. The locking ring/tank top assembly is then removed, allowing access to the cartridge. The cartridge should be removed and washed thoroughly with a garden hose and nozzle, focusing on each pleat. For stubborn deposits like algae, suntan oil, calcium, and body oils, soaking the element in a de-greaser and then a de-scaler is recommended.
  • O-Ring Inspection and Lubrication: During cartridge cleaning or any disassembly, the tank O-ring should be inspected for damage, cleaned, and lubricated with a silicone-based lubricant before reassembly. This ensures a proper seal and prevents leaks.
  • Breather Tube Maintenance: The breather tube, located within the filter, should be periodically checked for obstructions or debris. If clogged, it should be removed and flushed with running water until clear. A damaged or obstructed breather tube can lead to product failure and safety hazards, so immediate replacement is necessary if issues are found.
  • General System Checks: Regular checks include inspecting the outside of the filter for cleanliness, monitoring the pressure gauge weekly for leaks, removing debris from the skimmer basket and pump hair/lint pot, and checking for any leaks in the pump and filter. Any leaks should prompt immediate shutdown of the pump and consultation with a qualified pool service technician.
  • Safety Signage: Product safety signs and labels should be regularly inspected and cleaned to maintain legibility. If any labels become unreadable, they should be replaced to ensure ongoing safety awareness.
  • Troubleshooting Guide: The manual provides a comprehensive troubleshooting guide to help identify and resolve common issues such as unclear water, low water flow, short filter cycles, high pressure on start-up, and dirt returning to the pool. This guide offers potential problems and corresponding solutions, empowering users to address minor issues or determine when professional assistance is required. For complex problems, contacting a qualified service technician is recommended.
