Overview

The JENSEN CD-485 is a portable stereo compact disc player with an integrated AM/FM stereo radio, designed for personal audio enjoyment both at home and on the go. This versatile unit combines traditional radio functionality with modern CD playback capabilities, offering a range of features for a satisfying listening experience.

Function Description

The primary function of the CD-485 is to play audio compact discs and receive AM/FM radio broadcasts. It supports standard commercial CDs and is also capable of playing self-compiled CD-R/CD-RW discs, although playback quality for the latter may vary depending on disc quality and compilation software. The unit features a top-loading CD compartment, making disc insertion and removal straightforward.

For radio reception, the device includes an AM/FM stereo radio tuner. An extendable telescopic antenna is provided for FM reception, which should be fully extended for optimal performance. For AM reception, an internal bar antenna is used, and repositioning the unit may improve signal strength. The radio also includes an FM Stereo Indicator, which illuminates when a stereo broadcast is being received.

In addition to CD and radio functions, the CD-485 offers an AUX-IN jack, allowing users to connect external audio devices such as MP3 players, CD players, smartphones, and iPods (excluding 3rd generation iPod shuffle). This expands the unit's utility, enabling playback of audio from a wide range of sources through its built-in speakers. A headphone jack is also included for private listening, automatically disconnecting the built-in speakers when headphones are plugged in.

The unit is designed for portability, featuring a carrying handle for easy transport. It can be powered either by a standard AC outlet using the included AC power cord or by six "C" (UM-2) batteries, providing flexibility for use in various locations. When connected to AC power, the unit automatically disconnects the batteries.

Usage Features

The CD-485 is equipped with intuitive controls for ease of use. A Function Selector switch allows users to choose between "POWER OFF," "AM," "FM," and "CD/AUX" modes. A Volume Control knob adjusts the audio output level, while a Tuning Control knob is used to select desired radio stations.

For CD playback, the unit offers several control buttons:

  • PLAY/PAUSE (►II) Button: Starts or pauses CD playback. When paused, the PLAY/PAUSE INDICATOR flashes; it remains steadily lit during active playback.
  • STOP (■) Button: Stops CD playback.
  • SKIP + (►►|) Button: Advances to the next track or, when held down during play/pause, searches forward within the current track at high speed.
  • SKIP - (◄◄) Button: Returns to the beginning of the current track or, when held down during play/pause, searches backward within the current track at high speed.
  • PROGRAM (PROG) Button: Allows users to program a sequence of up to 20 tracks for playback. This function is accessible only in STOP mode. The PROGRAM INDICATOR flashes during programming and remains lit during program play.
  • REPEAT Button: Offers two repeat modes: "Repeat 1" for continuous playback of the current track, and "Repeat All" for continuous playback of all tracks on the CD. The REPEAT INDICATOR flashes for "Repeat 1" and stays lit for "Repeat All." Pressing the button again cancels the repeat function.

The unit features an LED Display that shows the total number of tracks on a CD, the current track number, and program numbers during programming. Various indicator lights (Power, Play/Pause, Repeat, Program, FM Stereo) provide visual feedback on the unit's operational status.

When using the AUX-IN function, the unit's volume control manages the output level, while all other functions, such as track selection or source control, are managed directly on the connected external audio device. For optimal volume, users may need to adjust both the unit's volume and the external device's volume, especially if connecting via the external device's headphone jack.

Maintenance Features

To ensure the longevity and optimal performance of the CD-485, several maintenance guidelines are provided:

  • Cleaning: The unit should be cleaned with a dry cloth. Solvents or detergents should not be used. For CD playback issues, the bottom surface of the disc may require cleaning; discs should be wiped from the center outwards with a soft cleaning cloth. If the CD player continues to have issues, a CD lens cleaning disc can be used to clean the pick-up lens.
  • Environmental Care: The unit should not be subjected to excessive force, shock, dust, or extreme temperatures. It should be kept away from direct sunlight, hot, humid, or dusty environments, as well as heating appliances and sources of electrical noise like fluorescent lamps or motors.
  • Battery Care: When operating on batteries, it is crucial to install them correctly, observing polarity. Mixing old and new batteries, or different types of batteries (alkaline, carbon-zinc, rechargeable), is not recommended. If the unit will not be used for an extended period, batteries should be removed to prevent leakage and potential damage. Batteries should not be recharged if they are not designed for it, nor should they be disposed of in fire. When the sound becomes distorted or CD operation is unstable, it indicates weak batteries, and all batteries should be replaced simultaneously to prevent leakage.
  • General Handling: Users should avoid tampering with the internal components of the unit. The CD door should not be opened while a CD is playing to prevent skipping or damage. Objects should never be pushed into the unit's openings, and liquids should not be spilled on the product.
  • Furniture Protection: The unit is equipped with non-skid rubber feet to prevent movement. However, certain furniture polishes or preservatives may cause the rubber to soften and leave marks. To prevent damage to fine wooden furniture, it is recommended to apply small self-adhesive felt pads to the bottom of the rubber feet.
  • Safety: The manual emphasizes important safety instructions, including proper power cord handling, ventilation requirements, and avoiding exposure to rain or moisture. Servicing should be referred to qualified personnel if the unit is damaged or malfunctions. For laser safety, users are warned not to disassemble the casing or touch the lens, as the laser beam can be harmful to the eyes.
