6. Cleaning and Maintenance
Clean the retort lid and seals
Use the provided paran scraper to scrape o the paran on the interior surfaces of the retort lid. Carefully remove the
paran along the lid seal.
1. Open the retort lid
2. Scrape along the edges of the retort. Ensure that the lid is hermetically sealed.
Replace a damaged seal immediately (for details, see below)..
6.3.1 Daily cleaning and maintenance
Cleantheretortlidandthesealcarefullyandonlywiththeparanscraperprovidedtoavoiddamaging
the seal and/or the PTFE coating on the retort lid. Do NOT damage the seal with the edges of the scraper.
Only completely cleaned cassette baskets may be used for tissue processing.
Seal replacement
Replace worn out or damaged seals immediately.
1. Pull out the old seal from the groove.
2. If necessary, clean the groove with a paran scraper and a permitted reagent for external cleaning (refer to Chapter 3.3)
3. Press the new seal into the groove uniformly.
4. Check to ensure that the seal is securely in place.
5. Compensate for the tension in the seal by moving your ngers along the seal to remove tight or loose areas.
Cleaning the retort
• Theretortmaybewipedcleanusingaclothmoistenedeitherwithasolvent(xyleneorethanol)oramilddetergent.In
particular, make sure that the air vent holes at the top front of the retort are not dirty.
Cleaningtheparancollectingbasin
Open the retort locking mechanism by pulling the handle (8, Fig. 234) forwards. Open the top left door on the instrument
(6) as well. Excess paran that drips when the specimen basket is removed is caught in the paran collecting bowl. This
must be checked once a week and if necessary placed in the laboratory oven (on cellulose) or cleaned with xylene substitute.
