Thischapterprovidesinformationaboutturningonandturningofftheserver.
Turningontheserver
Theservercanbeturnedoninoneofthefollowingways:
Afteryounishunpackingandsettinguptheserver,connectittoanacpowersource.Pressthepower
switchonthefrontofthechassistoturnontheserver.Theserverneedsabout30secondsforthe
ThinkServerManagementModule(TMM,alsoknownasBMC)toinitializewheneveryouconnectthe
servertoanacpowersource.Ifyoupressthepowerswitchduringthisperiod,theserverwillnotstart
immediately;itwillstartaftertheTMMinitializationnishes.
WhentheWakeonLANfeatureisenabledontheserverthatisconnectedtoanacpowersourceanda
LAN,anetworkadministratorcanremotelyturnonorwakeuptheserverfromamanagementconsole
usingremotenetworkmanagementsoftware.
YoualsocanusetherelatedTMMfeaturetoremotelyturnontheserverthroughthemanagementLAN.

Turningofftheserver
CAUTION:
Thepowercontrolbuttononthedeviceandthepowerswitchonthepowersupplydonotturnoff
theelectricalcurrentsuppliedtothedevice.Thedevicealsomighthavemorethanonepower
cord.Toremoveallelectricalcurrentfromthedevice,ensurethatallpowercordsaredisconnected
fromthepowersource.
Theservercanbeturnedoffinoneofthefollowingways:
Turnofftheserverfromtheoperatingsystemifyouroperatingsystemsupportsthisfeature.Afteran
orderlyshutdownoftheoperatingsystem,theserverwillturnoffautomatically.Forinstructionsonhow
toshutdownyourspecicoperatingsystem,refertotherelateddocumentationorhelpsystemfor
theoperatingsystem.
Pressthepowerswitchonthefrontofthechassistostartanorderlyshutdownoftheoperatingsystem
andturnofftheserver,ifyouroperatingsystemsupportsthisfeature.
Ifyourserverstopsrespondingandyoucannotturnitoff,pressandholdthepowerswitchonthefront
ofthechassisforfoursecondsormore.Ifyoustillcannotturnofftheserver,disconnectallpower
cordsfromtheserver.
IftheserverisconnectedtoaLAN,anetworkadministratorcanremotelyturnofftheserverfroma
managementconsoleusingremotenetworkmanagementsoftware.
YoualsocanusetherelatedTMMfeaturetoremotelyturnofftheserverthroughthemanagementLAN.
