Youcaninstallorreplaceahot-swapharddiskdrivewithoutturningofftheserver,whichhelpsyouavoid
significantinterruptiontotheoperationofthesystem.

TheEMIintegrityandcoolingoftheserverareprotectedbyhavingalldrivebayscoveredoroccupied.The
numberoftheinstalledharddiskdrivesinyourservervariesdependingontheservermodel.Thevacant
baysareoccupiedbydummyhard-disk-drivetrays.Whenyouinstallahot-swapharddiskdrive,savethe
removeddummyhard-disk-drivetrayfromthedrivebayincasethatyoulaterremovethehot-swaphard
diskdriveandneedthedummytraytocovertheplace.
Attention:AnunoccupieddrivebaywithoutanyotherprotectionmightimpacttheEMIintegrityandcooling
oftheserver,whichmightresultinoverheatingorcomponentdamage.TomaintaintheEMIintegrityand
coolingoftheserver,installanewhot-swapharddiskdriveassoonasyouremovethefailingoneor
thedummytray.
Beforeyoubegin,reviewthefollowingharddiskdriveinstallationrules:
•Followtheorderofthehard-disk-drivebayswheninstallingaharddiskdrive.See“Frontviewofthe

tolocatethehard-disk-drivebaysinyourserver.
•ForRAIDconfiguration,theharddiskdrivesmustbethesametypewiththesamecapacityiftheyare
withinasingleRAIDarray.Formoreinformation,see“ConfiguringRAID”onpage54.
