TROUBLE SHOOTING THE CHIPPER
PROBLEM PROBABLE CAUSES AND SOLUTIONS
Chipper will not 1. Dull knives. Sharpen or replace knives.
feed properly.
2. Loose belts. Check for the proper belt tension.
3. Knives ground at incorrect angle. Grind knives at
31°, (Refer to Knife Grinding Section on page 38).
4. Obstruction in infeed spout. If material lodges in the
chipper, raise yoke and install yoke lock pin. TURN
OFF ENGINE, REMOVE THE IGNITION KEY,
DISENGAGE THE CLUTCH AND WAIT FOR THE
DRUM TO COME TO A COMPLETE STOP. Carefully
pull the material from the infeed. Resume operation.
Chipper bearing 1. Lubricate or replace bearings.

(210° F Maximum). 2. Drum RPM too high. Do not exceed 2250 RPM’S.
Discharge spout plugged. 1. Obstruction in discharge spout. Remove obstruction.
Patches welded on spout may cause obstruction. If so

2. Chipper drum RPM too low. Always run chipper at full
throttle when chipping.
Chipper drum wobbles. 1. Bushings are loose. Torque to 80 ft. lbs.
2. Bearings cap loose. Torque to 80 ft. lbs.
3. Chipper bearings worn. Replace.
4. Knife pocket is plugged with material. Unplug pockets

Before attempting to do any maintenance on chipper, be sure that the engine is shut off, the
chipper drum is completely stopped and all lockout procedures are followed
