Fire-fighting Helmets / Preventive care, control
and maintenance
Version 7a/ May 2010 Page 7/36
- Traceability is required : recording of controls and of all modifications (parts
exchanged) on the helmet during its life span.
- A periodical control requires a complete disassembly of the helmet
Examples for „exceptional conditions/ strong exposure“ (indicative, not limited
to):
Horizontal, frontal or vertical shock (impact, falling objects, compression, etc.)
Direct exposition to flames
Direct exposition to a heat source
Prolongated use in a zone with very elevated temperature
Exposition to chemical products and/or molten metal
Exposition to electric current
Continued immersion in liquids
Traceability and maintenance follow-up
Chaque casque devrait être identifié individuellement :
• With a unique identifier (manufacturer’s serial number, personal identifier, etc.)
• Use labels applied inside the helmet shell (nothing graved in outside)
• Keep good records of all operations performed (Excel database for instance)
• When replacing a complete helmet, some good parts can be taken from the replaced
configuration (internal parts, chinstrap, etc.)
Control of a helmet on average takes 20 minutes.
Each element must be controlled and its conformity assessed with a reference. The
reference for the different parts are presented in the next chapter.
These are the conformity criteria of F1 helmets and components.
