Technical explosion protection consists of three principle possibilities.
• Primary explosion protection:
Prevention or restriction of the occurrence of hazardous potentially
explosive atmospheres by reducing or replacing combustible substances,
ventilation systems, inertization.
• Secondary explosion protection:
Prevention of the ignition of hazardous potential explosive atmospheres by
ensuring there are no ignition sources.
• Constructive explosion protection:
Restriction of explosion sources to a harmless level by the implementation
of measures such as explosion relief, explosion suppression or explosion-
resistant design.
Although the machine / plant does not actually have any own ignition sources, it
is not possible to rule out integration of an ignition source into the machine /
plant by third parties and consequently, the machine/plant is protected by
constructive explosion protection.
