Chapter 4 29
Installation
Chapter 4
Installation
In Chapter 2, the names and functions of the various components of the Model
5380 PFPD were defined. These names are used in this chapter to refer to compo-
nents involved in the installation of the Model 5380 PFPD onto a Hewlett-Packard
gas chromatograph (GC). The PFPD must be installed by a qualified technician,
preferably an OI Analytical technician.
After opening the shipping container, remove the following five components:
• PFPD Assembly with attached PMT housing assembly, two gas lines, heater
assembly cable, ignitor assembly cable, and detector mounting plate
• Detector Controller that contains the PFPD Controller PCB Board, and which
may include or exclude pneumatic lines and gas flow controllers
• PFPD Start-up Kit
• Detector Controller Start-up Kit
• WinPulse Software Package
Proper storage and handling of the detector components will ensure reliable
assembly and disassembly of the PFPD. Never handle tool parts that touch the
internal parts of the PFPD without latex gloves. Use clean lab tissues, the Teflon
®
extractor device, or Teflon-coated forceps to remove or replace internal detector
parts. Place removed parts on a clean, lint-free lab tissue or in a clean glass beaker.
Installing the Model 5380 PFPD Assembly
The PFPD assembly can be mounted on an Agilent 6890 GC, an Agilent 5890 GC,
or other GC models. The following description focuses on the PFPD installation
procedure for the Agilent 6890 GC, but notes for installation onto an Agilent 5890
GC are also included. If installing the PFPD in the Agilent 6890 Valve Box, see
“Installing the Model 5380 PFPD in the Agilent 6890 Valve Box” in this chapter.
Contact OI Analytical Customer Service or refer to specific instructions included
with the PFPD start-up kit regarding mounting on other GCs.
Preparing the GC
1. If the Agilent 6890 GC is not already in place, set it up according to the
instructions in the Agilent 6890 Series Gas Chromatograph Operating
Manual.
2. If the GC has been previously installed, turn off the GC power supply and
unplug the power cord. Turn off the supply gases at their sources after the
heated zones have cooled.
