Chapter 4 51
Installation
1. If the large aluminum sealing washer between the detector base and body was
dislodged during disassembly, place a new aluminum washer (Part #288050)
on the detector base (see Figure 4.6) using clean metal forceps.
2. Carefully place the detector body onto the detector base. Use the central hole
in the detector body to guide the detector body over the combustor support
and sleeve. (See note on preferred orientation of the PFPD below.)
3. Secure the detector body with the detector body screws (Part #295295C),
alternately tightening the screws until the detector body is touching the base.
Note: Preferred orientation of the PFPD:
• In the Agilent 6890 GC, the preferred orientation of the PFPD is with the
PMT housing assembly extending toward the right, into the electronics
compartment (see Figure 4.3). This minimizes interference with an op-
tional valve box that can be mounted in the center of the detector area.
However, with this orientation, the right rim of the GC detector cover and
the left rim of the electronics top cover have to be cut out to fit over the
PMT housing assembly.
To change the orientation of the PFPD, remove the detector body from the
detector base, reposition the detector body in the desired orientation, and
reattach it to the detector base using the detector body mounting screws.
Reassemble the rest of the detector as previously described.
• In the Agilent 5890 GC, the preferred orientation of the PFPD is with the
PMT housing assembly facing left into the center of the detector area, but
the detector can also be oriented with the PMT housing assembly facing
toward the back of the detector area.
To change the orientation of the PFPD, remove the detector body and
rotate it to the desired orientation. Reattach it to the detector base and
reassemble the rest of the detector.
4. Use the supplied Teflon combustor extraction tool to install the combustor
(Part #282939C for 2-mm I.D. combustor; Part #282913C for 3-mm I.D.
combustor) into the hole in the detector body. When a new combustor is being
installed, the combustor extraction tool should be used to remove the combus-
tor from its protective container by gently pressing the conical end of the
combustor extraction tool into the open end of the combustor. Lower the
combustor vertically into the hole in the detector body. If the combustor sticks
to the combustor extraction tool, use the supplied Teflon-coated forceps to
gently pry the combustor off of the tool and into the hole in the detector body.
The combustor is correctly installed when the top of the combustor sits
approximately 0.05" (1.25 mm) below the top surface of the detector body.
5. If the large aluminum sealing washer between the detector body and the
detector cap was dislodged during disassembly, place a new aluminum
washer (Part #288050) on the detector body (see Figure 4.11). Use clean
metal forceps to place and center the new washer on the center hole in the
detector body.
!
CAUTION: Do
not use Teflon-
coated forceps to
hold any metallic
part. Metallic
particles can be
transferred via
the Teflon
coating to the
combustor, which
can scratch or
contaminate the
combustor
surface.
