CHAINSAW NAMES AND TERMS
Automatic Oiler: A system that
automatically lubricates the guide bar
and saw chain.
Bucking:Theprocessofcross-cuttinga
felledtreeorlogintolengths.
Bucking Spikes:Thepointedtoothor
teethforusewhenfellingorbucking
topivotthesawandmaintainposition
while sawing.
Chain Brake:Adeviceusedtostopthe
saw chain.
Chainsaw Powerhead: A chainsaw
without the saw chain or guide bar.
Drive Sprocket:Thetoothedpartthat
drives the saw chain.
Felling:Theprocessofcuttingdowna
tree.
Felling Back Cut:Thenalcutinatree
fellingoperationmadeontheopposite
sideofthetreefromthenotching
undercut.
Front Handle:Thesupporthandle
locatedatortowardthefrontofthe
chainsaw.
Hand Guard: A structural barrier
betweenthefronthandleofachainsaw
andtheguidebar,typicallylocated
closesttothehandpositionofthefront
handleandsometimesemployedas
anactivatingmechanismforthechain
brake.
Guide Bar: A railed structure that
supportsandguidesthesawchain.
Kickback:Thebackwardorupward
motion,orboth,oftheguidebar
occurring when the saw chain near the
noseofthetopareaoftheguidebar
contactsanyobjectsuchasalogor
branch, or when the wood closes in and
pinchesthesawchaininthecut.
Low-Kickback Chain: A chain
thatcomplieswiththekickback
performancerequirementsofANSI
B175.1whentestedonarepresentative
sampleofchainsaws.
Normal Cutting Position: Those
positionsassumedinperformingthe
buckingandfellingcuts.
Notching Undercut: A notch cut in a tree
thatdirectsthetree’sfall.
Rear Handle:Thesupporthandle
locatedatortowardtherearofthesaw.
Reduced Kickback Guide Bar: A guide
bar which has been demonstrated to
reducekickbacksignicantly.
Replacement Saw Chain: A chain
thatcomplieswiththekickback
performancerequirementsofANSI
B175.1whentestedwithspecic
chainsaws. It may not meet the ANSI
performancerequirementswhenused
with other saws.
Saw Chain:Aloopofchainhaving
cutting teeth, that cut the wood, and
thatisdrivenbythepowerheadandis
supportedbytheguidebar.
Trigger Lock-Out:Amovablestopthat
preventstheunintentionaloperation
ofthetriggerswitchuntilmanually
actuated.
Trigger Switch: A device that when
operatedwillcompleteorinterruptan
electricalpowercircuittothemotorof
the chainsaw.
