OPERATING THE SAW
PRUNING
Whenpruning,makesureallbystanders
orhelpersareasafedistancefrom
fallingbranchesandarenotdirectly
infrontoforbehindthesawoperator.
Secureanybranchesthatmightpose
ahazard.Usetheproperauxiliary
equipment.Maintaingoodfooting,hold
thesawrmlywithbothhands,anddo
not overreach.
Withthesawatfullspeed,bringthe
bottomoftheguidebarintocontact
with the branch to be cut. Continue
cuttingusinglightpressure.Forlarger
branches,rstmakeashallowundercut
onthebottomofthebranchandthen
nishthecutfromthetop.Cuttinga
largebranchcompletelyfromthetop
couldcausesplintering.Acompletecut
fromthebottomcancausethebranch
topinchthebar.
FELLING A TREE
Whenbuckingandfellingoperations
arebeingperformedbytwoormore
persons,atthesametime,thefelling
operationshouldbeseparatedfrom
thebuckingoperationbyadistance
ofatleasttwicetheheightofthetree
beingfelled.Treesshouldnotbefelled
in a manner that would endanger any
person,strikeanyutilitylineorcause
anypropertydamage.Ifthetreedoes
make contact with any utility line, the
utilitycompanyshouldbenotied
immediately.
Thechainsawoperatorshouldkeepon
theuphillsideoftheterrainasthetree
islikelytorollorslidedownhillafteritis
felled.Aretreatpathshouldbeplanned
andclearedasnecessarybeforecutsare
started.Theretreatpathshouldextend
backanddiagonallytotherearofthe
expectedlineoffall(Fig.14).

Beforefellingisstarted,considerthe
naturalleanofthetree,thelocationof
larger branches and the wind direction
tojudgewhichwaythetreewillfall.
Remove dirt, stones, loose bark, nails,
staples,andwirefromthetreewhere
fellingcutsaretobemade.

NOTCHING UNDERCUT
Make the notch 1/3 the diameter
ofthetree,perpendiculartothe
directionoffall.Makethelower
horizontalnotchingcutrst.Thiswill
helptoavoidpinchingofeitherthe
saw chain or the guide bar when the
secondnotchisbeingmade(Fig.15).
