Makethefellingbackcutatleast
2inches(51mm)higherthanthe
horizontalnotchingcut(Fig.16).
Keepthefellingbackcutparallelto
the horizontal notching cut. Make
thefellingbackcutsoenoughwood
islefttoactasahinge.Thehinge
woodkeepsthetreefromtwisting
andfallinginthewrongdirection.
Do not cut through the hinge.

Ifthereisanychancethatthetree
maynotfallinthedesireddirection
or it may rock back and bind the
sawchain,stopcuttingbeforethe
fellingbackcutiscompleteand
usewedgesofwood,plasticor
aluminumtoopenthecutanddrop
thetreealongthedesiredlineoffall.
Whenthetreebeginstofall,remove
thechainsawfromthecut,stopthe
motor,putthechainsawdown,then
usetheretreatpathplanned.Bealert
foroverheadlimbsfallingandwatch
footing.

LIMBING A TREE
Limbing is removing the branches
fromafallentree.Whenlimbing,
leavelargerlowerlimbstosupport
the log off the ground. Remove the
small limbs in one cut. Branches
undertensionshouldbecutfrom
thebottomuptoavoidbindingthe
chainsaw(Fig.17).

BUCKINGALOG
Bucking is cutting a log into
lengths.Itisimportanttomakesure
footingisrmandweightisevenly
distributedonbothfeet.When
possible,thelogshouldberaised
andsupportedbytheuseoflimbs,
logs or chocks.
