COMMUNICATION PROTOCOL
7. COMMUNICATION PROTOCOL
The customer can select the protocol between Modbus and Profibus when placing orders. In case of
choosing communication bus controlling, the function code 09 must be set to 04, 05, or 06 to activate the
communication function.
7.1. Profibus Protocol
The device uses Profibus-DP to implement the communication function. The protocol standard is
specified by EN50170. The Profibus communication interface has the following features:
The Profibus performs cyclic communication rapidly;
The Profibus supports baud rate up to 12MHz;
Up to 125 soft starters can be controlled;
With a Profibus debugging tool, configuring is very easy;
The built-in Profibus communication module is very convenient in connection setup;
All control parameters of soft starter can be set, modified by serial bus;
The response time of data is 5ms.
Principles for quickly setup
It is necessary to connect with the cable between the master and softstarter correctly, including
terminal resistance (for communication rate of 12M).
The bus cable should be a shielded cable, the shielding should be connected to ground.
The bus must be in running status;
The softstarter must be power-on.
The slave address (function code) of soft starter must be set correctly and consistent with that on
the master. The soft starting address must be unique.
When the soft starter shows a fault of connection, please check the connection cable between the
master station and the softstarter, the slave address, and other parameters.
The terminal A and B should be connected to 220ohm resistance in parallel. When multiple
devices are connected in parallel, only one of them needs to be connected with a resistance.
7.1.1. Application protocol
The Profibus controls VS65 by data blocks. There are two data areas, the Parameter
Identification Area PKW and the Process Control Area PZD, occupying 2 words in input/output
respectively. The former is used to read and modify starter’s function parameters and the latter is
used to control and monitor status and current. The master station’s configuration is given by
GSD file (See the table below).

IND: Parameter index; PWE: parameter value; STW: Control word; ZSW: Status word; ACT:

The user may choose Type I (PPO1), which allows full operations on softstarter’s parameters
and control & monitoring; when parameter modification is not necessary, Type III (PPO3) may be
used.
