• the EFX provides a warm-up period before entering the five-minute Fitness
Test. Instructions appear requesting that you begin pedaling at a constant
stride rate of 70 strides per minute (SPM). The pace is increased until your
heart rate reaches 55% of the maximum heart rate (220 minus your age) or
the pace reaches 160 SPM. In either case, the Fitness Test commences at
this point.
• maintain a constant stride rate, but let the test adjust the resistance for you.
During the warm-up period the resistance is set at level 3. At the beginning of
the five-minute Fitness test, the resistance automatically raises to level 9.
CAUTION: if you need to stop pedaling to regain control or reduce your
heart rate, please do so — you can retake the Fitness Test later.
• the RESISTANCE ▼▲ and CROSSRAMP ▲▼ keys are disabled during the
test. Any pressure on the arrow keys is ignored.
• when you finish the Fitness Test, the pedal resistance is reduced. No auto-
matic cool-down period is appended to the test.
• create your own cooling down period when the test is complete by pressing
the QUICKSTART key to enter the Manual program. Return your heart rate
to a normal, restful state.
The Fitness Test ends if any one of the following occurs:
• you stop pedaling.
• your heart rate rises and remains for one-minute above the maximum allow-
able heart rate (220 minus your age). Refer to Diagram 18.
• your heart rate increases and climbs above 85% of the maximum allowable
heart rate (220 minus your age).
• you press RESET.
• you complete the test.
Important: The Fitness Test continues even though a user walks away part
way through the test or removes the chest strap or their hands from the
touch-sensitive grips. The test score will not be accurate because no recep-
tion (and therefore no measurement) of the heart rate was available at the
end of the test period.
