12. Steering
Your boat comes equipped with a hydraulic steering system connected to a single rudder. The basic
system for a single engine boat contains a steering wheel, a hydraulic helm pump, a hydraulic steering
cylinder, hydraulic hoses, and a bypass valve system.
Operaon
When turning the steering wheel, the helm pump forces hydraulic uid through hoses to and from the
steering cylinder which is connected to the ller arm on the rudder. The cylinder moves the ller arm
to either port or starboard, depending upon the direcon the steering wheel is turned.
Filling and Maintenance
A hydraulic steering system rarely needs to be relled aer the system is bled. However, if you ever
need to add uid to the system, refer to the steering manufacturer’s manual for complete
instrucons.
Emergency Steering
In the event of loss of steering, your boat is equipped with an emergency steering ller arm. To use
insert the manual ller arm extension onto the rudder sha. Next, rotate the bypass valve located in
the starboard a corner access hatch, 90 degrees down. This allows the hydraulic uid to bypass the
helm and allow manual movement of the rudder.
