WhenyouprogramMotorolaandEDACSsystemfrequenciesintothescanner,onefrequencyisthecontrol(ordata)channel,and
therestarevoicefrequenciessharedbyalltheusers.Theremaybe3or4frequenciesassignedas(primaryoralternate)control
channelsbutonlyonecontrolchannelwillbeactiveatatime.EDACSsystemsneedallthefrequenciesforthesystem
programmedandinthecorrectLCN(LogicalChannelNumber)order.
Thecontrolchanneliscontinuallytransmittedtothefieldunitsandhasasoundsimilartolisteningtoaboatengineoverthephone
(inmanualmode;youwon'thearthiswhenyouaretrunkingthesystem.)Thiscontrolchannelisalsoagoodchecktoseeifyou
cantrunktrackthesystem.Ifyoucan'thearacontrolchannelwhenyoustepthroughthetrunkingfrequencies(inmanualmode),
youeitherdon'thaveallthefrequenciesoraretoofarawaytoreceivethecontrolchannelandthesystem.Motorolasystemsare
limitedtoamaximumof28frequenciespersystemorsite.EricssonEDACSsystemsarelimitedto25frequenciespersystemor
site.MotorolaandEDACSsystemscanbeeitheranalog,digital,ormixed(digitalandanalogtalkgroups).Thisscannercan't
monitordigitalsystems.
TrunkscanningisbasicallyscanningIDsthatareprogrammedintoIDlocations(sameconceptasfrequenciesintochannels.)You
canthentrunkscanjusttheprogrammedIDs.TrunktrackingissearchingforallIDsinasystem(sameconceptassearchingfor
frequenciesinaband).

MotorolaIDscomeintwoformats:TypeIandTypeII.EachformatdisplaysandusesTalkGroupIDsinslightlydifferentways.Type
I/IIhybridsystemsusebothTypeIandTypeIIformatsforTalkGroupIDs.
TypeIIDsareintheformatFFFSSwhereFFFisthefleetandSSisthesubfleet.TypeIsystemsareusuallyorganized
withdifferentIDsassignedtodifferentfleets.Forexample,avalidfleet/subfleetIDidentifyingalldetectiveswithinapolice
departmentmightbe00012,where000identifiesallpoliceIDsand12identifiestheDetectivedivision.Toproperlytrunk
aTypeIsystem,youhavetoprogramthefleetmapforthesystem.
TypeIIIDsareidentifiedbya5digitnumber.
EDACSIDscomeintwoformats:AFS(AgencyFleetSubfleet)andDecimal.
AFSIDsareintheformAAFFSwhereAAistheagency,FFisthefleet,andSisthesubfleet.EDACSsystemsare
organizedwithdifferentIDsassignedtodifferentfleetsandagencies.Forexample,avalidagency/fleet/subfleetID
identifyingalldetectiveswithinapolicedepartmentinanagencymightbe06101,where06identifiestheagency
(Police),10identifiesthePolicedivision(Eastside),and1identifiestheDetectivedivision.

Thescannerispreprogrammedwithallthefrequenciesallocatedtotheweather,ham,marine,aircraft,andpublicsafetyservices.
Thishelpsyouquicklyfindactiveorunknownfrequenciesinsteadofdoingalimitsearch.Also,theyaregoodforfindingfrequencies
whentraveling.Thescanneralsohas1programmablelimitsearchandadirectsearchwitchallowsyoutostartsearchingata
specificfrequency.
ChannelStorageBanks
Allthechannelsaredividedinto2mainbankgroups,AandB.Channelnumbersstartat1inbank1andgoupto500inbank10.
Eachmainbankgrouphas10banksof50channels.YoucanonlyuseeitherAorB,notboth.Useeachchannelstoragebankto
groupfrequencies,suchasthoseforpolice,fire,ambulance,aircraft,ortrunkingsystems.
Youcanalsoprogramyourtrunkingfrequenciesandconventionalfrequenciesintothesamebanksaswelltoutilizechannelspace
better.Bysimplylockingoutthetrunkedfrequencies,youcantheneithertrunkabankorscanabank.Thescannerwillstilltrunkthe
lockedoutfrequencies.
Tip:Theoretically,youcanalsoprogrammorethanonetrunkingsystemintoabankaslongasyoucanonlymonitoroneatatime,
indifferentlocations,farenoughapart,sothesystemyouaremonitoringwon’tinterferewithanyothersystem(whichwouldconfuse
