1) Zone factor according to Figure 3 -> 4
2) Determine required number of sticks in Table 3 -> 12
Result: 12 beech wood sticks are required
3.4 Test procedure
z Determine the required number of sticks.
z Place a flame-retardant underlying board below the hotplate
z Arrange the required number of wooden sticks in a star pattern on the cold
hotplate.
z Check that the test is carried out at a safe distance from combustible material
and have the extinguishing equipment ready
z Switch on the hotplate so that a temperature of 500 - 600°C is reached after
approximately 10 minutes.
z When an alarm has been triggered, switch off the hotplate and using the shovel
deposit the remains of the wood in the bucket of water.
z Ventilate the room.
3.5 Notes
z In rooms higher than 10m test fires must be planned individually. In addition to
using larger amounts of combustible material, a much higher heating output is
required in order to generate the necessary thermal uplift (see Note / Tip). In
addition the ceiling construction, the positioning of detectors and especially the
ambient temperature in the vicinity of the detectors play a major role.
z In rooms in which the air is exchanged >7 times/h the acceptance test fire must
be specified individually. If the air is exchanged 7 to 20 times/h, twice the
number of beech wood sticks is required.
z The acceptance test fire for detectors which are not contained in the table must
be individually specified. A guideline for the number of sticks required can be
obtained by comparing the smoke sensitivity of the individual detectors.
Note / Tip:
Lighting several polyurethane mats is also a suitable way of generating additional
thermal uplift. Tests under real conditions in rooms with heights of 10 – 14 m have
shown that by lighting two polyurethane mats smoke is transported to the detector
after test duration of about eight minutes.
Furthermore it can be plausibly explained to the customer that this test realistically
simulates actual conditions, as a smoldering fire normally develops into an open
fire.
