Introduction
1.3.4 Basic rules
The following must be observed during an acceptance test fire:
z Never carry out acceptance test fires with unknown combustible materials.
Always first employ a known test fire procedure.
z Whenever possible use the aerosol generator SG3000.
z When possible avoid using the following test fires as they generate pollutants
and sometimes toxic gases:
– Open plastic fires (polyurethane mats)
– Pyrolitic smoldering fires (wooden sticks)
z If possible perform preliminary tests without spectators -> specify the fire
location and fire size.
z Ignite the test fire as close as possible to a detector so that the least possible
quantity of the combustible material must be burnt.
z Before the test fire explain the operating principle of the detector to spectators.
z A continuous commentary should be given during the test, e.g. the development
of the fire, possible air currents, spread of smoke etc. The test will then be more
easily comprehensible to laypersons and misunderstandings are prevented.
z If a test is unsuccessful only one test modification at a time should be made for
the next test, e.g. location, fire size, detector setting etc.
