5 Combustible liquid fire (TF6)
5.1 General
A certain amount of spirit (ethyl alcohol) is ignited for this type of acceptance test
fire. The result is a smokeless fire with powerful heat development.
5.2 Infrastructure
z Heat source: Lighting with a match
z Combustible material: Spirit containing at least 90% ethyl alcohol (C

OH)
z Auxiliaries: Steel sheet container with a wall thickness of 2mm,
protective container of stainless steel and a
flame-retardant underlying board
z Safety: Portable dry powder extinguisher

5.3 Combustible material
With a combustible liquid fire the size of the fire is directly related to the surface of
the fire and therefore the size of the container. The following applies:
z The surface area determines the size of the fire
z The quantity of liquid combustible material determines the duration of the fire
(taking the surface area into account)
The TF6 is almost exclusively used for testing the response of heat and flame
detectors. Heat detectors react to temperature and an increase in temperature; flame
detectors react to the radiation of the fire. As both detector types react to completely
different fire phenomena, it is not surprising that the different detectors trigger an alarm
in response to different fire sizes. This must be taken into account when determining
the necessary fire sizes.
