3.14.8 VRRP
Menu path
You can find this information in MSPS devices under "Layer 3 > VRRP / VRRPv3".
Information
"VRRP" lets routers provide a redundant gateway IP address for other routers or
terminal devices. This address is shared by all routers with the same VRID in the
local network. The current master handles the traffic on the virtual shared IP
address.
Terminal devices can use the unique virtual IP address as a gateway.
Recommendation
You should prefer "VRRPv3" over "VRRP" thanks to the faster failover time.
3.14.9 Default gateway
Menu path
You can find this information in the following paths:
With MSPS: "Layer 3 > Static Routes"
With X-200 and X-300: "Agent"
Recommendation
Even if the devices currently do not need a default gateway, future expansions may
necessitate one, for example if more subnets are added or if you set up remote
maintenance.
Always set a default gateway in the devices to an unused IP address in the local
subnet. If you need a router at a later point in time, you can assign this address to
the new router.
This is important with S7 controllers, as the gateway in this case cannot be
retroactively modified without putting the CPU in STOP.
Note on MSPS devices
Within the layer 3 menu, the default gateway is defined with a route with the
destination "0.0.0.0".
