SYSTEM OPERATIONS-31
AUTOMATIC FIRE
EXTINGUISHER SYSTEM
Your 34C is equipped with a Automatic
Fire Extinguisher System, which is per-
manently mounted under the salon oor in
the engine compartment.
The Automatic Fire Extinguisher Sys-
tem (AFE) is designed for use in enclosed
compartments that are not normally occu-
pied by passengers and are not normally
subject to weather or water exposure. The
automatic re extinguisher is designed to
extinguish Class B res ( ammable liq-
uids) and Class C res (electrical), which
would be the type that would normally oc-
cur within the con ned area of the engine/
generator compartment.
NOTE: The automatic re extinguisher
system DOES NOT replace the need for
additional portable-type re extinguish-
ers required by the United States Coast
Guard.
The automatic re extinguisher is acti-
vated when the engine/generator compart-
ment reaches 165° Fahrenheit/74° Cel-
sius. The system releases HALON 1301
into the compartment, which immediately
converts to a safe, odorless and electri-
cally non-conductive vapor that will not
harm the components in the engine/gen-
erator compartment. In contrast to other
re extinguishing materials, HALON 1301
leaves no residue, assisting in the even-
tual cleaning of the compartment.
The automatic re extinguishing system
on your 34C is equipped with a GREEN
indicator light, located on the helm switch
panel.
The purpose of this indicator light is to
alert the operator of the charge/discharge
status of the Automatic Fire Extinguish-
ing System. The indicator light will illu-
minate when the ignition switch is turned
to the ON position if the system is fully
charged. If the indicator light fails to illu-
minate after turning on the ignition switch,
carefully examine the exterior of the en-
gine/generator compartment for evidence
of a re that may have discharged the
system by looking for signs of “scorching”
and by your sense of smell.
If the Green indicator light does not
illuminate after turning on the igni-
tion switch or if it turns off at any time
during operation of your yacht, either
at dockside or while underway, DO
NOT open the engine compartment for
at least ten (10) minutes. Opening the
engine compartment immediately will
allow air to enter and may cause a re
ashback”, possibly resulting in seri-
ous injury or death. The sudden rush
of air into the engine compartment may
also render the automatic re extin-
guishing system ineffective.
