Chapter 7: Troubleshooting and Support
7.3 Troubleshooting Procedures
Use the following procedures to troubleshoot your system. If you have followed all of the
procedures below and still need assistance, refer to the Technical Support Procedures or
Returning Merchandise for Service section(s) in this chapter. the system before changing any
non hot-swap hardware components.
Before Power On
1. Make sure that there are no short circuits between the motherboard and chassis.
2. Disconnect all ribbon/wire cables from the motherboard, including those for the keyboard
and mouse.
3. Remove all add-on cards.
4. Install the CPU (making sure it is fully seated) and connect the front panel connectors to
the motherboard.
No Power
1. Make sure that there are no short circuits between the motherboard and the chassis.
2. Make sure that the ATX power connectors are properly connected.
3. Check that the 115V/230V switch, if available, on the power supply is properly set.

5. Check the CPU socket for bent pins and make sure the CPU is fully seated.
6. The battery on your motherboard may be old. Check to verify that it still supplies
approximately 3VDC. If it does not, replace it with a new one.
System Boot Failure
If the system does not display POST (-On-Self-Test) or does not respond after the power is
turned on, check the following:
Turn on the system with only one DIMM module installed. If the system boots, check for bad
DIMM modules or slots by following the Memory Errors Troubleshooting procedure below.
Memory Errors
1. Make sure that the DIMM modules are properly and fully installed.
