BeforeOperating
CAUTION
Ifyouleavethekeyintheignitionswitch,someone
couldaccidentlystarttheengineandseriously
injureyouorotherbystanders.
Removethekeyfromtheignitionbeforeyoudoany
maintenance.
CheckingtheEngineOil
ServiceInterval:Beforeeachuseordaily
Theengineisshippedwithoilinthecrankcase;however,the
oillevelmustbecheckedbeforeandaftertheengineisrst
started.
Thecrankcasecapacityis5.7liters(6qt.)withthelter.
Usehigh-qualityengineoilthatmeetsthefollowing
specications:
APIClassicationLevelRequired:CH-4,CI-4orhigher.
Preferredoil:SAE15W-40(above0°F)
Alternateoil:SAE10W-30or5W-30(alltemperatures)
ToroPremiumEngineOilisavailablefromyourdistributor
ineither15W-40or10W-30viscosity.Seethepartscatalog
forpartnumbers.
Note:Thebesttimetochecktheengineoiliswhenthe
engineiscoolbeforeithasbeenstartedfortheday.Ifithas
alreadybeenrun,allowtheoiltodrainbackdowntothe
sumpforatleast10minutesbeforechecking.Iftheoillevel
isatorbelowthe“add”markonthedipstick,addoiltobring
theoilleveltothe“full”mark.DONOTOVERFILL.
Iftheoillevelisbetweenthe“full”and“add”marks,no
additionaloilisrequired.
1.Parkthemachineonalevelsurface.Unlocktheengine
coverlatches.
2.Opentheenginecover.
3.Removethedipstick,wipeitclean,installthedipstick
intothetube,andpullitoutagain.Theoillevelshould
bebetweenthefullandaddmarks(
Figure10).

5.Installtheoilllcapanddipstick.

Checklevelofcoolantatthebeginningofeachday.Capacity
ofsystemis8.52liters(9qts.)fortheGroundsmaster4100
and20liters(14.5qts.)fortheGroundsmaster4110.
1.Carefullyremovetheradiatorcapandexpansiontank
cap(Figure11).
CAUTION
Iftheenginehasbeenrunning,the
pressurized,hotcoolantcanescapeandcause
burns.
Donotopentheradiatorcapwhenthe
engineisrunning.
Usearagwhenopeningtheradiatorcap,
andopenthecapslowlytoallowsteamto
escape.
2.Checkthecoolantlevelintheradiator.Theradiator
shouldbelledtothetopofthellerneckandthe
expansiontanklledtotheFullmark.
