17.1USINGJUMPERCABLES
Theseinstructionsapplytotheuseofafullychargedboosterbatteryinanothertrucktostart
theengineofatruckwithadischargedbattery.
WARNING
• Toavoiddamagetoyourtruck,orthepossibilityofharmtoyourself,followtheseinstruc
tionsandwarnings,Ifyouhaveanyquestions,consulttheToyotadealer.
Incaseofgasolineenginemodels(1battery)

(2) Jumpercables
(3) Stalledtruck
(4) Helpertruck
Beforeusingjumpercable,besuretofollowtheinstructionsbelow.
▪ Useonlya12voltnegativegroundbatterytostartyourtruck.(Use12Vbatteryx1for12
Vmodels)Ifyouarenotsureofthevoltage,orifthegroundisdifferent,donottrytojump
start.Personalinjuryordamagetotheelectricalsystemcanresult.Damagetotheelec
tricalsystemwillnotbecoveredbythemanufacturer’swarranty.
▪ Checkfluidlevelofthedischargedbattery.Iflow,adddistilledwatertothecorrectlevel.
Besuretoinstallthecapsbeforejumpstarting.
CAUTION!Use face shield to protect your face when adding water to the the bat‐
tery.
CAUTION!Use particular care when connecting a booster battery to prevent sparks.
▪ Puttheboosterbatteryasneartothetruckasnecessaryforthejumpercablestoreach
bothbatteries.Checkandmakesurethatthetrucksdonottoucheachother.
▪ Applytheparkingbrake.
▪ Putthecontrolleversintheneutralposition.
▪ Turnoffthekeyswitch
▪ Turnalllightsandaccessoriesoffandleavethemoffuntilaftertheenginehasbeenstar
tedandthejumpercablesremoved.
Connectthejumpercableinthefollowingprocedure:
1. Connecttheredjumpercablefromthepositive(+)terminalononebatterytothepositive
(+)terminalontheotherbattery.Neverconnect(+)to()or()to(+)asthismaydamage
thealternator.Makesuretheclampsdonottouchanyothermetal.
2. Connectoneendoftheblackcabletotheground()terminalofthe“helpertruck”battery.
3. Connecttheotherendoftheblackjumpercabletoastationary,solidmetalpointonthe
engine of the truck you are starting.(NOT TO NEGATIVE () TERMINAL OF THE
BATTERY.)
NOTICE!Make this connection at a point at least 18 inches ﴾450 mm﴿ away from the
battery, if possible. Do not connect it to pulleys, fans, or other parts that move.
4. Starttheengineonthehelpertruck,andruntheengineatamoderatespeed.
5. Starttheengineofthetruckwiththedeadbattery.Besurethattheengineisatidlespeed
beforedisconnectingthejumpercables.
6. Removethejumpercablesbyreversingtheabovesequenceexactly.Startbyremoving
the black jumper cable from the engine block of the truck with the discharged battery.
Thenremovetheotherendofthenegative()cablefromthe“helpertruck”.
